My mother’s sobs caught in her throat.

My father, Robert Davis, stood motionless. After several seconds, he took out his phone and made a call.

His voice returned to the calm, authoritative tone of Senator Davis.

“Howard, transfer fifty thousand dollars to Chloe’s trust account. Process it as her annual education fund. Now.”

My phone vibrated almost immediately.

I glanced down at it.

A notification from my banking app had popped up.

Fifty thousand dollars.

I blinked.

Olivia’s annual budget for clothes and social events was three hundred thousand dollars.

Seeing me stare at my phone, my father seemed to think I was disappointed. His expression soured.

He cleared his throat.

“You’re different from Olivia. You’ve never managed a large sum of money on your own. Fifty thousand is sufficient.”

I nodded immediately.

Fifty thousand.

That was fifty thousand dollars.

I lived and ate at the Davis house for free. I could save almost all of it and treat it as the first round of seed money for my future.

The whole ugly scene was smoothed over by a wire transfer.

Of course, no one apologized.

The Davises never admitted they were wrong.

They just shifted the blame back to me.

Sure enough, my father spoke again.

“We’ll let this go for now. But remember, you are a Davis. Conduct yourself with discretion. Don’t do anything to give people reason to gossip again.”

I agreed as I walked toward the stairs.

“Father, I don’t think she heard a word you said.”
