The car moved slowly down the road.

In the back seat, Sloane was nearly sick with anxiety.

Grant remained calm, his eyes drifting toward the gift box.

Back when they had first gotten married, all his startup funds had been tied up, leaving them with nothing but a simple homemade dinner.

Yet Claire had never looked down on him for it. The love in her eyes had been so full it had almost melted him.

He had promised her that one day, he would buy her a ten-carat diamond ring.

When Claire saw this gift, she would probably weep with joy.

The sharp sound of brakes cut through the air as the car stopped outside the estate.

The two of them pushed open the door and walked inside.

Grant sat down on the couch and told Mrs. Hayes to bring him tea, waiting for Claire to come out and make peace.

Sloane rushed upstairs and pounded hard on the bedroom door, but the door showed no sign of opening.

Panic flooded Sloane, and the unease in her chest grew stronger.

She kept pounding, loud enough to make Grant frown in annoyance.

In a cold voice, he shouted upstairs.

“Claire, are you really throwing another tantrum like a spoiled princess?”

“We both came all the way here for you. What else are you making a scene about?”

“You’re petty and short-sighted. You’re not even half as understanding as Vivienne.”

Mrs. Hayes stood nearby, wiping sweat from her forehead.

After hesitating for a long moment, she finally spoke in a trembling voice.

“Mr. Whitmore… Mrs. Whitmore left with her suitcases a long time ago.”

“Before she left, she specifically told me there was a document in the drawer for you to read.”

Grant reeled, completely oblivious to the hot tea spilling over his hand.

Then he stumbled up the stairs, practically on all fours, and kicked open the bedroom door.

The bright bedroom had been left neat and tasteful, just as always, except something essential was missing.

He opened the closet.

It was completely empty.

The only things left were a few of his own ties.

Sloane walked to the desk and picked up a photo of the three of them together.

In the picture, Claire was lying across Sloane’s back, one hand holding Grant’s, smiling so brightly it hurt to look at.

The girl they used to know had already left for good.

She had not even wanted this photo anymore.

Sloane collapsed to the floor, clutching the picture as she sobbed.

Grant sat down on the edge of the bed.

He did not have the courage to open that drawer.

After struggling with himself for a long time, he finally reached out with trembling hands.

A small part of him was still holding on to hope.

He refused to believe Claire would actually stop wanting him.

The next second, the words divorce papers came into view.

He closed his eyes.

Every last trace of color drained from him.

After a long while, Sloane’s crying gradually stopped.

She picked up the photo and was about to leave.

Grant finally came back to himself and called after her.

“Leave that photo here.”

Sloane ignored him, throwing a cold laugh over her shoulder as she kept walking.

Grant rushed forward and grabbed her arm.

“That’s something Claire left for me.”

Sloane turned on him, eyes red with fury.

“Like hell you deserve it.”
