She Vowed to Kill Him for Me, Then Helped Him Propose to Another Woman Chapter 04

Memories flashed through my mind like a cinematic blur.

Back then, I had just graduated from college and applied to be Grant’s executive assistant. He was only running a small startup.

But he had never been subtle about loving me; there were

A public confession spelled out by drones.

A hidden surprise projected across a waterfront light show.

My name tattooed over his heart.

Sloane had witnessed everything, from the moment Grant and I met to the day we fell in love.

We supported each other through the hardest years until he became the high-and-mighty Mr. Whitmore, and I became Mrs. Whitmore.

Later Vivienne took over my old position.

Maybe because they had both grown up without stable families, they felt some special kind of sympathy for each other.

The first time I caught him cheating, Vivienne was wearing my pajamas and lying in my bed like she belonged there.

When I walked in on them, Vivienne ran out crying.

Grant explained that he had only treated her as a stand-in for me.

For the sake of the baby I was carrying, I chose to forgive him.

Now I realized that moment had been a warning to cut my losses while I still could.

The pain in my body was nothing compared to the agony in my heart.

Grant, this time, I chose to let go.

On the day I was discharged, I told no one.

I returned to the Whitmore estate, packed every piece of luggage I owned, and placed the divorce papers inside the nightstand drawer.

Then I drove straight to my parents’ house, the only safe place I had left.

When my father saw me, he immediately smiled and came over to carry my bags.

My mother linked her arm through mine and kept fussing, saying she would make me her freshly baked biscuits.

When I returned to my familiar bedroom, I lay down on the bed.

For the first time in days, my heart felt strangely steady.

My mother knocked and came in with a plate of fruit, hesitation written all over her face.

“Claire, did something happen?”

“You look exhausted, sweetheart.”

I did not hide it from them, knowing they would find out sooner or later.

By the time I finished telling them everything, my mother was already in tears.

She wrapped her arms around me and stroked my hair.

“My poor baby girl , what did they do to you?.”

My father stood outside the door, his fists clenched before he slammed one hard into the wall.

At dinner, none of us mentioned Grant or Vivienne again.

My parents kept smiling as they put food on my plate.

But the pain in their eyes could not be hidden.

My phone vibrated at the worst possible time.

I answered, and Grant’s furious roar exploded through the line.

“Claire, look what you’ve done.”

“Someone recorded Vivienne at the café that day and posted it online.”

“Now everyone is calling her a mistress. She’s threatening to kill herself.”

“The doctors said she has severe depression.”

“You need to go online right now and clear her name. Otherwise, don’t blame me for what happens next.”

I clicked my tongue and hung up.

When Grant called again, I blocked him without hesitation.

My parents looked at me with concern.

I waved it off.

“It’s fine. Just a rabid dog barking at the wind.”

But I underestimated how far they would go to protect Vivienne.

Early the next morning, Sloane knocked on my parents’ front door.

We had grown up together.

Her family lived right next door to mine.

My parents had loved her like a second daughter.

But this time, neither of them gave her a warm look.

Their faces stayed cold, and they did not respond even when she greeted them politely.

Sloane’s face turned gray with embarrassment as she looked at me.

“Claire, can we talk alone?”

I agreed, not wanting my parents to worry about me any more than they already had.

But I never expected Sloane to take me to an abandoned warehouse.
