The day I found out Grant Whitmore was cheating on me, my best friend grabbed a butcher kitchen knife and swore she’d kill him after him.

“How dare he hurt you?” Sloane Mercer snapped. “Does he think I’m some kind of pushover?”

“I’ll skin that bastard and his homewrecker alive.”

I held back the tears burning my throat and pulled out my pregnancy test.

“Sloane, I’m pregnant.”

“The baby’s healthy. Five months along.”

She went silent.

Then she dragged Grant over and made him get down on his knees to beg for my forgiveness.

Grant clung to me and wept, promising over and over that it would never happen again.

But on the day of my next OB-GYN appointment, I caught sight of them through a restaurant window.

There was my best friend, who was supposed to be at her boxing club for a match.

And there was Grant, who was supposedly still away on business in Port Haven.

The two of them were sitting beside another woman.

Sloane was holding a bouquet. Grant was holding a ring.

The crowd around them clapped and cheered.

“Say yes! Say yes!”

I stopped in my tracks, pushed open the door, and went inside.

I made my way through the noisy crowd.

By the time I reached them, Grant had already slid the ring onto the woman’s finger.

The ten-carat diamond caught the light with a blinding luster that cut straight into my eyes.

Then the two of them kissed passionately.

Sloane covered her mouth, tears shining in her eyes as she scattered rose petals over their heads.

“This is perfect. Finally, true love gets its happy ending.”

The applause gradually died down.

I laughed until tears spilled out, lifted my hands, and clapped hard .

In the sudden quiet of the restaurant, my applause sounded especially sharp and mocking.

People began pointing at me, frowning in irritation.

Then Sloane noticed me.

Her face went deathly pale.

Her lips trembled before a broken sound slipped out.

“Claire…”

“Why… why are you here?”

When Grant heard my name, he finally let go of the woman in his arms.

A thin, disgusting strand of saliva stretched between their mouths as they pulled apart.

This time, he did not cry and beg the way he had before.

Instead, he looked defiantly composed.

“Claire, since you’ve seen everything, I won’t bother making excuses.”

“Vivienne and I truly love each other. You’ll still be Mrs. Whitmore.”

“Vivienne is timid. Don’t scare her.”

Sloane rushed over too, blocking my way and shielding that bitch behind her.

“Claire, I’ll explain everything later.”

“Vivienne isn’t the kind of woman you think she is.”

I looked at the best friend who had grown up with me.

My breathing turned ragged, my chest rising and falling too fast.

“Twenty years, Sloane. We were together for twenty whole years.”

“And now you’re standing in front of me, defending the woman who destroyed my marriage?”

“Vivienne isn’t a homewrecker.”

It was the first time Sloane had ever spoken to me so harshly.

Terrified that the crowd might misunderstand Vivienne, she grew even more desperate to defend her.

“Don’t listen to her, everyone. She’s my best friend,Sloane announced, tapping her temple.”

Then Sloane pointed at her own head.

“She’s not exactly stable up here.”

The crowd immediately turned on me with open contempt.

“Crazy people belong in psych wards.”

“Why is she running around ruining some couple’s proposal?”

I stared at Sloane in disbelief.

“You’re saying I’m mentally ill?”

Grant wrapped an arm around Vivienne Shaw and joined in.

“You heard them. Get back to whatever facility you crawled out of.”

Vivienne nestled against Grant’s chest and gave me a smug little smile.

Something in my head snapped completely.

My hands shook at my sides.

I shoved Sloane away and rushed straight at Grant.

Then I kicked him hard in the knee.

As he staggered in pain, I grabbed Vivienne by the hair and yanked her toward me.

“What the hell were you smiling at just now?”
