The Video Call from Hell Chapter 04

The Video Call from Hell Chapter 04

Ethan froze.

Serena seemed to want to say something, but in the end, she only sobbed out, “I’m sorry.”

Hayden cheered.

Ethan’s mother gave a cold snort.

“It should have been this way from the beginning. The title of Mrs. Bradford belonged to Serena all along.”

She had always refused to complete the paperwork that would have had Ethan legally declared dead.

I had thought it was because she could not bear the thought of a mother having to bury her own son.

It turned out she had been waiting for this all along.

I gave a mocking smile, then turned and left.

The court-mandated thirty-day waiting period before our divorce could be finalized felt both endless and impossibly brief.

Once the final papers were signed and filed, our eight-year marriage was over for good.

Ethan called after me, his voice full of guilt.

“You can keep the house. You can…”

I ignored him and walked away without looking back.

Every corner of that house held memories of the two of us, and every memory was a thorn dripping with blood.

I didn’t want it.

I went to my parents’ cemetery.

Serena was kneeling in front of their headstone, weeping as she confessed.

“Mr. and Mrs. Carter Sr., I’m sorry. I hurt Evelyn.”

“I promised you I would take good care of her, but I broke that promise.”

“I’m sorry.”

My parents had died in a fire while saving her.

Back then, when Serena was so guilty that she wanted to trade her life for theirs, I had held her back with everything I had.

I had treated her like the last living piece of my parents they had left behind.

I had treated her as my only family.

I never imagined that she and the man I loved would drive the deepest, cruelest blade into me.

I shoved her away and roared, “Get out! Don’t drag your filthy affair with Ethan in front of my parents!”

With red-rimmed eyes, Serena carefully reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry, Evelyn. I truly didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

“We’re still best friends, aren’t we?”

I scoffed.

“You ran away from your own feelings and dragged an innocent person like me into the middle of your

mess.”

“Then, because you couldn’t control yourself, you slept with my husband and helped him fake his death so

the two of you could live happily together.”

“And worst of all, you killed my child.”

“Serena, how do you still have the nerve to say we’re best friends?”

I slapped her hard across the face.

I used every ounce of strength I had.

She lost her balance, and her head struck my parents’ headstone.

Blood poured out.

Ethan suddenly appeared.

The moment he saw the blood on Serena’s forehead, his eyes blazed with fury.

“Evelyn, have you lost your mind? Serena is your best friend!”

“She only just gave birth, and she still came here to pay respects to your parents. What more do you want?”

I screamed, “I don’t need it! Get out! My parents don’t want to see you two cheating pieces of trash!”

Ethan’s chest heaved with rage.

“Fine. You don’t want her paying respects, right?”

He grabbed a shovel from nearby and lifted it high.

My breath caught, and my heart seemed to stop.

“What are you doing?”

Before the words were even out of my mouth, the shovel came down on my parents’ headstone with a deafening crash.

The headstone toppled to the ground.

Still not satisfied, Ethan raised the shovel again.

“Dad! Mom!”

I broke down and sobbed, throwing myself over my parents’ fallen headstone like a madwoman.

The shovel, too late to be pulled back, slammed hard into my back.

I coughed up a mouthful of blood.

Ethan froze and was just about to rush toward me.

Then Serena suddenly fainted beside him.

Without the slightest hesitation, he turned, scooped Serena into his arms, and hurried away.

A little while later, the thirty-two-year-old Ethan sent me a message.

Ethan: [Evelyn, Serena has another scar on her forehead. Did you do this again?]

Ethan: [I’m warning you. Don’t hurt Serena again.]

I ignored him.

Hot tears fell onto my parents’ photographs.

“I’m taking you both with me.”

At the hospital, Ethan let out a sigh of relief when he learned Serena only had a mild concussion.

Then he suddenly remembered something.

Evelyn had been hurt, too. She had coughed up a lot of blood.

He called her, but no one answered.

Panic rose higher and higher in his chest.

He immediately rushed back to the cemetery.

When he arrived, he saw that the photographs had been removed from Evelyn’s parents’ headstone.

The urns buried beneath it were gone, too.

Her phone lay on the ground, pinning down a medical report.

He crouched down and looked at it.

His eyes went wide with shock, and his heart seemed to stop.

Just then, the phone rang.

A familiar profile picture popped up on the screen from the WhatsApp account he had not used in two years.
