My mind exploded. My voice came out choked and strained.

“What did you say?”

Ethan froze for a second, realizing he had let something slip.

He pressed his lips together.

After hesitating for a few seconds, he seemed to give up pretending altogether.

“The person who pushed you down the stairs at the mall and caused your miscarriage back then was sent by Serena.”

My breath caught. My heart seemed to stop.

After Ethan was gone, I stopped eating and drinking. I spent every day holding his urn, crying day and night.

Then, later, I found out I was pregnant.

That baby he had left behind reignited my will to live.

But less than two days later, I lost the baby because someone had deliberately hurt me.

I completely fell apart.

Even handfuls of antidepressants could not stop the urge to hurt myself.

It was Serena who stayed by my side every minute, trying every possible way to help me pull myself together.

It was Serena who helped me walk out of that darkness.

And now he was telling me she was the person who had killed my baby.

She had even stolen my chance to ever become a mother again.

The blood in my body slowly went cold.

“Serena did it for your own good. At that point, the baby would only have been a burden to you.”

“She didn’t know that miscarriage would leave you unable to have children ever again.”

“She was afraid you’d be devastated, so she forbade anyone from telling you.”

“She’s always been thinking of you.”

“Thinking of me?”

I cut him off sharply.

It was so absurd it was almost laughable.

“She had my baby killed and left me infertile, and you call that thinking of me? That is the biggest joke I have ever heard.”

“Was betraying me and sleeping with you also her way of thinking of me?”

Ethan’s face darkened, and his voice turned cold as ice.

“Evelyn, don’t act like being right gives you the right to be cruel.”

I trembled all over, clutching at my chest as if I could hold my ruined heart together.

Tears poured down my face.

When Ethan saw me crying, a flicker of pain crossed his eyes.

He seemed about to say something, but Serena’s voice came from his end of the video.

“Babe, who are you talking to?”

“Today is our fifth wedding anniversary. You promised you’d set off fireworks across the whole city for me.”

Ethan ended the call in a panic.

I gave a bitter smile.

He had made the same promise on our fifth anniversary.

Back then, I had waited for it with a heart full of hope.

What I got instead were those giant words blazing across the sky.

[Serena, I’m sorry.]

He explained that he had accidentally broken the LEGO set Serena had been halfway through building.

Serena had demanded a citywide apology before she would forgive him.

He had clearly put her first in everything.

How had I been stupid enough not to see it?

I went to the hospital.

Serena’s room was filled with laughter.

“My baby brother is so cute! I love him so much!”

“My precious grandson. His eyes look like his mommy’s, and his mouth looks like his daddy’s.”

Ethan’s mother and Hayden were gathered around the newborn.

Ethan was feeding Serena soup.

“I had the housekeeper make you lobster bisque with your favorite Maine lobster.”

He scooped up a spoonful and blew on it gently.

Only after making sure it was not too hot did he bring it to Serena’s lips.

He could never remember what I liked.

Yet when it came to Serena, he remembered everything.

They had grown up together since they were kids.

I had always thought Ethan and I simply had not known each other long enough.

If we loved each other for another ten or twenty years, he would eventually remember.

Only now did I understand.

It had never been about time.

It had only been about whether he cared enough.

Serena was the first to notice me standing in the doorway.

Her eyes reddened instantly, and she choked out, “Evelyn, you came to see me. Does that mean you’re willing to forgive me?”

Mrs. Bradford Sr. immediately clutched the baby closer, her eyes filled with suspicion.

Hayden rushed over and kept shoving me.

“Go away! You’re not allowed to hurt Mommy or my baby brother!”

Ethan yanked him back and snapped at him.

Hayden threw himself into Serena’s arms and burst into loud sobs.

Exhausted in body and soul, I looked at Ethan.

“Let’s get divorced.”
