Before the dinner officially began, there was the customary round of small talk with the elders.

Senior Mr. Collins sat at the head of the table, his gaze sharp as he asked Ethan, “Aren’t you going to introduce her?”

Ethan calmly took my hand, fingers intertwined, and led me to the old man.

“Grandfather, this is Chloe Parker. She’s mine.”

His tone was calm but absolute.

Gasps went up from the crowd.

Lynn stepped forward, her eyes reddening.

“Ethan, Miss Parker was with Zachary for so long. Bringing her to a family dinner will embarrass him and

make the Collins family a laughingstock.”

Her words were masterfully manipulative – sounding concerned about the family’s reputation while

reminding everyone I was just a secondhand plaything.

Sure enough, senior Mr. Collins’s expression darkened, and he gave me a cold look.

Just as I was about to go into battle mode, Ethan chuckled.

“A laughingstock?” He raised his eyes coldly.

“Since she’s the one I chose, who in this family would dare laugh at her? As for embarrassment…”

His gaze passed over Lynn and landed on Zachary.

“Not being able to recognize or keep the people closest to you – that’s what’s truly embarrassing.”

After the pleasantries, the dinner began.

Ethan was called away by some of the older business associates, so I took a glass of champagne and

slipped onto the terrace for fresh air – and to calculate my bonus.

The night breeze was cool, carrying a hint of flowers.

I had just sat down when I heard hurried footsteps behind me.

Before I could turn, someone grabbed my wrist and yanked me against a chest reeking of tobacco.

“Chloe!” Zachary’s voice was hoarse, desperate.

He pressed me against the cold balcony railing, his bloodshot eyes churning with jealousy.

“Dressed like that, with your arm around him, smiling at him so sweetly – is this how you seduced my

brother?”
