His Dead Lover Came Back I Asked for Overtime Pay Chapter 06

Smack!

The sharp sound echoed through the empty penthouse.

I put all my strength into it, finally broke free, and slapped him across the face.

Zachary’s head snapped to the side, red finger marks blooming on his pale cheek.

The air went dead again.

I was panting, my palm stinging, while inside I was screaming: Oh no, I just hit the boss’s brother – is my

severance gone?

But I was already committed.

I had to see it through.

“Zachary, wake up!” I covered my swollen lips and sobbed, tears streaming down my face.

“Stop humiliating me! Yes, I’m poor, I’m nobody – but I’m still a person. I’m not a toy you and your brother

can use and discard on a whim!”

I’d rehearsed those lines for days.

Full of emotion. I poured my heart into every word.

Zachary slowly turned his head, running his tongue over his cheek.

He didn’t get angry.

He just looked at me with a strange, deep gaze.

“A toy?” he repeated softly, then gave a low laugh that made my blood run cold.

“Chloe, you play your part pretty well.”

My heart skipped a beat.

What did that mean?

Had he seen through me?

“At the restaurant today, you walked away so decisively not a moment’s hesitation.” Zachary stepped

toward me, his eyes locked on me like a hawk. “And now you’re here, acting like you’re devastated and still deeply in love?”

He touched my cheek again – lightly this time, but the pressure was suffocating.

“I’ve been with you for three years. I know you. The way you looked at your suitcase just now was more

affectionate than the way you ever looked at me.”

Cold sweat trickled down my back.

Damn his intuition.

Hadn’t his brain rotted from all the drinking and racing?

“That’s not true…” I tried to lie.

“Shh.” Zachary pressed a finger to my lips.

“No matter what you’re planning, Chloe – as long as I haven’t said it’s over, this game keeps going.”

He leaned down, his voice low and dangerous in my ear.

“Even if Lynn is back, you – you’re not getting away.”

I was speechless.

Dude, what is wrong with you?

Your first love isn’t dead. Go be with her.

Why are you clinging to your substitute?

Just as I was trying to break the stalemate, a car engine shut off outside.

Then the doorbell rang – insistently, in the quiet night.

Zachary frowned, annoyed at the interruption.

He didn’t let go of me, just looked toward the door.

“Answer it,” he said coldly, finally releasing me.

Grateful for the escape, I hurried downstairs and opened the door.

I froze.

Standing outside wasn’t Lynn.

It was a stranger in a black suit, his expression serious.

Behind him, I recognized the black Maybach.

“Miss Parker,” the man said, bowing slightly. His tone was respectful but firm.

“I’m Mr. Collins’s personal assistant. He sent me to take you home. Now.”

From the stairs, Zachary’s voice was ice.

“Which home? She’s not going anywhere tonight.”

The assistant looked up at Zachary, calm and unflinching.

“Mr. Collins said that since Miss Parker is his ‘little pet, she ought to sleep by his side. Don’t you agree?”
