The next day, Dante went to the cemetery in New Jersey.

Lena led the way. Luca came too, wearing a little suit with a white bellflower pinned to his chest.

The gravestone was small, plain. It read:

Dante stood in front of the grave for a long time.

Then he knelt and started digging with his bare hands.

Lena was horrified. “What are you doing?!”

He didn’t answer. He dug his fingers into the dirt. His nails cracked, blood seeped out, but he didn’t stop.

He wanted to dig up her coffin.

He wanted to see her one more time.

I floated beside him and screamed, “No! Dante, no!”

He couldn’t hear. He dug for two full hours, his fingers torn to shreds. Rocco couldn’t stand to watch anymore. He tried to pull Dante away, but Dante shoved him off.

Finally Lena screamed through her tears, “There’s no coffin! She was cremated! All you’re holding is ash!”

Dante stopped.

He stared at his hands, caked with dirt and blood.

“The ashes?” he asked.

Lena pulled a small silver urn pendant from her bag. It was tiny, the size of a thumb.

“She asked me to keep it. She said if you never found out the truth, keep it with me. If you did… then give it to you.”

Dante took the pendant and opened it.

Inside was gray powder.

He pressed the pendant to his lips and kissed it for a long time.

Then he hung it around his neck, right over his heart.

“Let’s go,” he said, standing up. He spoke into the air. “Home.”

I knew he was talking to me.

Telling me to come back to our home.

His fingers were dripping blood, but he didn’t seem to feel the pain.

I followed him into the car. He stared out the window at the sky, his lips barely moving.

I leaned closer and heard what he said.

“Nora, from now on, you’re right here.” He tapped the pendant on his chest.

“Wherever I go, you go.”
