“Darling, don’t be upset… Amelia must be doing this to get back at you. She knew today was Jamie’s big day, so she sent this to embarrass you in front of everyone.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but the nearby elders heard every word.

“How could she be so vicious?” Savannah’s tears began to fall. “To send something like this to my son’s party. Is she trying to curse him?”

“Shut up.”

Carter’s voice was a raw whisper.

He shoved Savannah away, not even glancing at her shocked expression.

His eyes were glued to the divorce decree, as if he could burn a hole through the paper with the force of his gaze.

He flipped frantically through the pages.

He had to find the attachments.

He had to find the agreement he had signed.

He had to see what, exactly, Amelia had done.

Finally, he reached the last page.

There it was, highlighted in yellow, impossible to miss:

“As a condition of the peaceful dissolution of the marriage, the husband, Carter Beauchamp, does hereby voluntarily and permanently waive all parental rights to the female fetus conceived during the marriage (Termination of Parental Rights).”

Beneath the clause, a small sticky note was attached.

Amelia’s familiar, elegant handwriting.
