“The woman is insane.”

Carter’s friends had gathered around him. One of them tried to take the document from his hand, his tone still casually dismissive.

“Don’t let her get to you. She’s just trying to ruin your day. What ex-wife wouldn’t pull a stunt like this?”

“Exactly. Making such a fuss over a daughter? Is it really that serious?”

But Carter didn’t speak.

He stared at the sticky note, the blood draining from his face.

He knew this wasn’t a joke.

It wasn’t an emotional outburst.

This was the final move.

With a legal document he had treated as a mere inconvenience, Amelia had passed judgment on him and the entire Beauchamp family.

Savannah was practically glowing.

She had assumed Amelia would, at most, walk away with a large settlement. She never dreamed the woman would sever ties so completely, not even allowing Carter a claim on the child.

For Savannah, this was a gift from heaven.

He pushed through the stunned crowd and bolted.

He didn’t hear the sound of a champagne flute shattering or the gasps that followed.

He burst onto the terrace, the cold night air a brief, sharp slap of clarity.

He fumbled for his phone and called Amelia, his fingers frantic.

The first call went to voicemail.
