Laney’s head snapped up.

“The shooting at the black market was staged,” Camden said with a bitter smile. “We just wanted to force him to leave you. We never intended for him to die.”

“He’s badly hurt, but Alphas recover quickly. He’s alive. It’s just—”

Laney was already out of bed.

She stared at them.

“Where is he?”

There was light in her eyes again.

But that light wasn’t for them.

“Take me to him,” she said. “Now.”

Half an hour later, at a private medical facility hidden deep in a suburban forest.

Archer lay on a hospital bed, his body wrapped in bandages.

The powerful regenerative abilities of an Alpha were slowly knitting his wounds back together.

He was alive.

Laney rushed to his bedside and grabbed his hand, tears falling onto the back of it.

“Archer.”

Archer slowly opened his eyes. When he saw her, a weak smile touched his lips.

“Laney… as long as you’re okay.”

Laney shook her head desperately.

“I’m fine. I’m so sorry. This is all my fault—”

Camden and Preston stood in the doorway, watching them.

After a long time, Preston finally said,

“Take him and go.”

Laney and Archer both turned to look at him.

“We’ve withdrawn the arrest warrant and the bounty,” Camden said, each word a struggle. “We’ve prepared new identities for you. And money. Leave. Go as far as you can.”

Laney froze.

“You—”

“It’s for real this time.” Preston’s smile was full of bitterness. “We’re letting you go.”

He walked to the bedside and looked at Archer.

“Take care of her. If she suffers even the slightest bit, I don’t care where you hide. I will find you.”

Archer nodded.

“I’ll protect her with my life.”

“Go,” Camden said, turning his face away, his voice hoarse. “Before we change our minds.”

Laney helped Archer up and they slowly walked toward the door.

When she passed Camden and Preston, she paused for a second.

But she said nothing. And she didn’t look back.
