I looked at him and couldn’t help but laugh. “Mr. Thompson, we’ve already broken up. Now we’re just strangers. I hope you can understand that and stop making things difficult for me.”

My words cut through him like a blade. He clenched his hands into fists, looking at me with anguish.

“I was just fulfilling my duty as a brother by taking care of my brother’s widow and child. I may not have handled it well, but Lisa and I are completely innocent. We never did anything proper. Why can’t you forgive me?”

He pressed his lips together and said, “Sarah, I know I screwed up. Lisa was in trouble, so I gave her extra care and neglected you. But you’re always the most important person in my heart.
