I Took the Money and the Quadruplets Chapter 09

On the fourth day after I moved into my ocean-view villa, Julian arrived with his entourage.

When the doorbell rang, I was on the terrace, reading a book on modern art history aloud to the babies in my belly.

“Good God, Ava, are you trying to sunbathe yourself into a piece of California installation art?”

I turned to see Julian striding through the gate, dressed in a flawless linen suit, his hair perfectly coiffed. Behind him, two assistants were wrestling with equipment cases.

He marched over, took my face in his hands, and examined me critically.

“You’ve lost weight. Texas really is unfit for human habitation.”

I laughed.

“I’m three pounds heavier than I was. The doctor just confirmed it.”

“Doctors have no aesthetic sense,” Julian dismissed with a wave of his hand. He took a folder from his assistant and shoved it into my hands. “Look at this. Gagosian’s fall exhibition. They want you as a guest curator.”

I stared at the file, stunned.

This wasn’t just an invitation. In the art world, this was a coronation.

“Do they know I just got divorced?”

“They know,” Julian said. “So what? They want you, Ava. You’re my best student. You have taste and you have judgment. That’s what matters.”

He was right.

That was my real currency.
