My marriage to Liam Walker had been a transaction from the very start.

At the time, my family’s investment firm was structuring an energy portfolio and needed Walker Energy’s access and influence in Texas.

Liam, in turn, needed a wife with a spotless background, refined taste, and no overt ambition to seize power—all to appease a father obsessed with public image.

I fit the role perfectly. So I married him, temporarily shelving my own career and aspirations.

“So, what’s the Texas wonder boy’s next move?” Julian asked, sinking into a chair across from me and accepting a glass of ice water from his assistant.

“I don’t know.” I flipped through the gallery’s letter of intent. “And I don’t care. We’re over.”

“He probably doesn’t think so.”

Julian gestured toward the television in the living room.

A financial news channel was running a story.

“Walker Energy Group issued an official statement at nine o’clock this morning, declaring that the marriage between its heir, Liam Walker, and his wife, Ava Walker, remains stable. The company states that recent online rumors of a divorce are ‘malicious fabrications’ and that its legal department reserves the right to pursue all liable parties—”

I looked at the text and had to laugh.

That was Liam, all right.
