The speed couldn’t outrun the crushing silence in the cabin.

He called me. My phone was off.

He sent a text. No reply.

He tried to call again. The number you have dialed is no longer in service. She had blocked him.

He pulled over beside one of Walker Energy’s massive drilling platforms and lit a cigarette.

The flare of the lighter illuminated a string of memories—details he’d taken for granted.

When I first joined the Walker family, I hadn’t tried to curry favor with anyone, nor had I seemed intimidated.

Before his business trips, his suitcases were always packed, his cuff links laid out just so.

When he worked late in his study, I would leave him a glass of water, then retreat to a chair with one of my books, a silent, calming presence.

He pulled out his phone and called his chief assistant.

“Find out where Ava went. Use every resource we have.”

“Yes, sir,” the assistant said instantly, then added, “Sir, the twenty-million-dollar transfer was executed according to the prenup. Legal has confirmed the process was valid. The funds cannot be reversed.”

“I know,” Liam said. “I don’t care about the money.”

He paused.

“And find the person Cassidy planted in our legal department. Handle it.”

“Understood.”

“And one more thing. Prepare a statement. I want it sent to all major media outlets at nine a.m. tomorrow.”

The assistant hesitated.

“What is the subject of the statement, sir?”

Liam stared out at the steel skeletons of the oil rigs piercing the night sky.

“A clarification.”

He took a drag from his cigarette.

“Ava Walker and I are not divorced.”
