Liam let out a short, harsh laugh that held no warmth.

“Who gave you the right to make decisions for me?”

Cassidy took an involuntary step back.

She didn’t understand. In the past, Liam had always been patient with her, even indulgent. Now, he looked at her as if she were a complete stranger.

Liam’s voice dropped, becoming even colder.

“Our families’ history bought you my tolerance. That’s all. You should never have touched her.”

When those last three words landed, the silence in the room was absolute.

The last of the color drained from Cassidy’s face.

Liam didn’t give her another glance.

“As of market open tomorrow, all contracts between Walker Energy and Hathaway Group are terminated. And we will be shorting your stock. You and your father can deal with the fallout.”

With that, he turned and walked out.

Cassidy collapsed, her legs giving out from under her. She sank to the floor, her body trembling.

She had lost. Utterly.

Nothing had gone according to her plan. She had only succeeded in pushing herself, and her family, off a cliff.

After leaving the gala, Liam got in his car and drove, pushing the vehicle down the empty Texas highway.
