My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 16

Jake’s lips parted, but no words came out. His gaze dropped to my stomach.

“My parents know you’re pregnant. They’re thrilled,” he said. “Elara, do you really want our child to be born without a father?”

I looked at him, thinking how predictable it was for a man to use a child as his last line of defense.

“That’s not the point, Jake,” I said. “The point is, you know exactly how you feel about me. You married me to get me away from Mark so Chloe could have a shot with him. Now that we’re separated, you two can finally be together. Isn’t that what you both wanted?”

Jake’s jaw tightened as if I’d struck a nerve.

I had wanted to ask him that question a thousand times.

When Chloe’s late-night calls could pull him from our bed, I’d wanted to ask. When she’d dangled a new necklace he’d bought her in front of my face, I’d wanted to ask.

But he always shut me down with the same line: “She lost her husband. You have to understand.”

He had never once put my feelings first.

“We’re already at this point,” I said. “What’s the use in pretending to be in love? If you only want to stay with me for the baby, then there’s even less of a reason. A home without love or respect is the last thing a child needs.”

Jake stood frozen, the color draining from his face.

He opened his mouth several times, but nothing came out.

Just then, his phone rang.
