He looked down at the report, his brow furrowing deeper with every line he read.

After a few seconds, he looked up, his voice altered.

“Elara… you’re pregnant?”

My first instinct was to deny it.

But my name and medical record number were printed right there. There was no use.

I reached out and snatched the report from his hand, shoving it back into the folder.

“This has nothing to do with you,” I said. “The papers are signed.”

I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm.

“What do you mean it has nothing to do with me?” His voice was tight. “I’m the father. Elara, we’re just separating. This isn’t final. We can withdraw the papers.”

I looked at him, and the absurdity of it all hit me.

“Withdraw them?” I let out a short, sharp laugh. “You think Chloe would like that? Aren’t you two a perfect match? Why don’t you take her to celebrate? You could even set a wedding date.”

Jake’s grip on my arm tightened.

“I never said I wanted to be with Chloe,” he said, his words rushed. “I feel responsible for her. I was just taking care of her.”

Over his shoulder, I saw Chloe’s face go pale.
