The scene was almost funny.

For years, I had been the one carefully watching their reactions. Now that the papers were signed, it was Chloe’s turn to panic.

She rushed forward and grabbed Jake’s other arm.

“Jake, don’t you think this is a little convenient?” she said. “Her pregnancy report just *happens* to fall out the day you sign the papers? Don’t you think she might have done it on purpose?”

I looked at her, finally seeing the mask of innocence fall away completely.

“She did it on purpose!” Her voice grew sharp. “Jake, you can’t let her fool you again!”

I met her frantic gaze. “If I wanted to use this baby to keep him, why would I have waited until after the papers were signed to let him find out?”

Chloe sputtered.

After a moment, she managed, “Because you wanted him to feel guilty. Elara, I knew you were a schemer from the start.”

I didn’t have the energy to argue with her. I turned to leave.

That’s when Jake spoke.

“Chloe, go wait in the car.” His voice was low and hard. “This is between Elara and me. Stay out of it.”

He paused, then added the words that made Chloe’s face drain of all color.

“I believe her.”
