I was afraid of cockroaches.

He knew that.

They were the one thing I feared more than anything.

When I was little, my family was locked in a vicious fight over the inheritance.

To keep me from getting my share, my stepmother locked me in a basement full of cockroaches, hoping I would die there.

There were bones in that place. The stench of rot.

That basement became a nightmare I could never escape.

I had told Orion all of it.

And he had handed my weakness to Chiara on a silver platter.

I begged him, but he acted as if he hadn’t heard a word.

He just watched as Chiara continued her torture.

“What are you looking so wronged for?”

“You should be grateful you got to stay by my side this long.”

“All I’m asking is for you to cooperate a little. Is that so much to ask?”

“Did you see that?”

“Quick, move a little closer.”

The men all surged forward.

The red-hot fury in my eyes was almost impossible to contain.

“Estelle, don’t be scared.”

“When Orion’s done with you, you can come to me.”

“I’ll treat you right.”

“Get lost. Aren’t you already married?”

“Estelle, come with me. I’m single.”

“If you can keep Orion happy, you must be a real pro in bed.”

“I want a turn, too.”

In that moment, I was just an object on display, a piece of meat for them to appraise and bid on.

I stared at them and spoke each word with chilling clarity.

“Orion DeLuca. Chiara Ricci.”

“You’d better remember today.”

“I will pay this debt back twice over.”

“And the two families you value so much will fall with you.”

As soon as I finished, another wave of laughter filled the room.

“You’re a small-town girl. What could you possibly do to bring down our families?”

Seeing that I couldn’t move, Chiara rushed over and slapped me.

Her nails dug in, scraping across my face.

A hot, stinging pain flared instantly.

“I hate this face of yours the most.”

“It’s too good at seducing men.”

She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

“I’ll tell you something else.”

“When the bet is over, I’m going to have them catch more cockroaches and shove them in your mouth.”

“A disgusting woman like you deserves to eat disgusting things, doesn’t she?”

“And when you’ve had your fill, they can touch you however they want.”

I looked at her.

“You’d better pray you’re not the one eating cockroaches tonight.”

“And you’d better hope you’re not the one getting touched.”

“Shut up.”

She slapped the other side of my face.
