Revenge Is the Best Wedding Gift Chapter 06

But Rafe was still a step too late.

Just as he pushed open the window, the hem of my dress slipped desperately from his fingertips, falling straight toward the ground like a butterfly with broken wings. All that remained on his hand was cold, slippery mud.

That was what I’d gotten on me when he heartlessly kicked me out of the car into that mud puddle.

The huge visual impact caused Rafe’s brain to go blank briefly.

He stood frozen at the window for a few seconds before suddenly realizing what he’d just watched slip away. He screamed my name like a madman, tumbling and crawling out of the room, stumbling frantically downstairs.

The distance from the third-floor bedroom to the first-floor back garden felt like suffering through a century of torment for Rafe.

Finally, he found me on the lawn. He reached out with trembling fingers to check my breathing—thank God, there was still a weak breath.

“What are you standing there for? Call 911!”

Rafe roared furiously at Victoria, who had followed him out.

During every minute and second waiting for the ambulance, Rafe held me tightly in his arms, scalding tears falling uncontrollably onto my pale-as-paper cheeks.

He babbled incoherently, confessing and apologizing desperately.

His voice was full of humble pleading.

“I’m sorry, Lavinia, I’m sorry. I’m a bastard. I shouldn’t have let jealousy cloud my judgment. I shouldn’t have hurt you with such despicable methods.”

“Everything I said in that room was just angry words. I went crazy because I love you too much. I married you because I really can’t live without you…”

“Please, Lavinia, don’t leave me. As long as you wake up, I swear I’ll never act crazy again. I promise with my life.”
