My mother was both angry and distressed.

“He treated you like this, and you’re still thinking about him?”

Claire didn’t hear a word of it. She scrambled up and ran for the door.

My father, who had been silent the whole time, finally snapped. He chased after her and slapped her across the face.

“Have you not made enough trouble? Do you have any idea what it means for Silas to pull his investment? Do you know what a mess you’ve made?”

Claire covered her face and stared at him blankly.

In that moment, she probably finally understood.

In our father’s heart, business mattered more than she did.
