Divorced & Dying The Mafia Boss Regrets Everything Chapter 22

Dominic stood watching as she was pushed away. He clenched and unclenched his fists, then slumped to one side, barely steadying himself on the railing.

He had been running nonstop these past few days–seeing doctors, researching the condition, evaluating options. He had been there in person every time, and in the end, the result was freither good nor bad, but at least there was a sliver of hope.

But Grace refused.

He remembered what Carmela had told him: that Grace’s aunt had actually taken her own life. When she died, it wasn’t dignified. She was completely paralyzed and couldn’t move, so she had ended it quickly.

Carmela had looked pained as she spoke. After a long pause, she continued, “When the young lady left, she asked Miss Grace to step out for a moment. Just a moment. By the time Miss Grace came back, she was gone.”

Dominic had no response for a long time.

A thought flashed through his mind. Dominic wondered if Grace’s refusal of surgery and her determination to die came from a fear of following her aunt.

If the surgery failed, it failed. Even if it succeeded, the tumor’s location meant she would almost certainly be

paralyzed. Grace didn’t want that.

She didn’t want to be a vegetable, conscious but unable to move. So she refused treatment, refused surgery,

preferred to die.

Understanding this, Dominic let out a long breath and fought back the tears in his eyes. He had Henry arrange for the top international specialists they had invited, while he himself contacted a reclusive

traditional healer.

Everything was ready.

But there was still one hurdle: Grace.

Late at night, after the nurse had finished her rounds and left, Dominic pushed the door open.

The room was quiet except for the soft hum of machines. The person in the bed had her eyes closed. Dominic watched her for a long time, watching the faint rise and fall of her chest, before his heart finally settled.

Grace wasn’t fully asleep. She sensed something and opened her eyes in the dim light.

Sure enough, a tall, cold figure stood motionless by her bed. Grace closed her eyes wearily, saying nothing. Someone carefully tucked the blanket around her. Then she heard him speak. “Just this once, Grace. I’ve

never asked you for anything. But just this once. If you don’t wake up after the surgery, I’ll perform the euthanasia myself.”

Grace opened her eyes and looked at him. With the light behind him, she couldn’t read his expression. She said nothing, though she had almost said, “You’ve begged before for Sienna, you even knelt.”

But it wasn’t appropriate. They had been divorced for a long time. Grace felt awkward.

After a long silence, she spoke, her tone unexpectedly earnest. “The tumor is in a bad spot, and it’s malignant. The surgery will be difficult. Dominic, just don’t want to die on the operating table. Is that so hard?”

Dominic shook his head anxiously. “No, we have the best doctors. You have to trust me, Grace…”

“Look, who do you think you are, making me promises like that?”

As Dominic stammered, another drop fell on Grace’s hand.

She watched the man simply stare at her, tears streaming down his face, saying nothing.

Grace had lost count of how many times Dominic had cried in front of her.

After a while, whether from a softening of her heart or sheer annoyance, Grace reluctantly agreed, her tone still impatient.

“You heard me. If the surgery fails, it fails. But even if it succeeds, if I don’t wake up–or if I wake up paralyzed–you have to let me die. Don’t fucking put me through that, got it?”

Dominic’s lips parted. He took her hand and pressed it to his cheek, his voice hoarse and choked. “All right. I

promise.”

Grace didn’t pull her hand away. After a moment, she asked the question that had been burning in her heart.

“Dominic, why?”

Why did he want her to live so badly?

Why had he rejected the Grace who loved him so much, and instead fallen for this Grace—the one with nothing, who spoke harshly to him, who was about to die?

There were so many whys. Grace was curious.

Dominic turned his head and kissed her palm.

“Because I’ve changed.”

“I love you.”
