When Love Burned to Nothing Chapter 06

When Love Burned to Nothing Chapter 06

Bianca’s face went stiff. Her mind was racing.

No matter how she tried to explain it, she knew Ken wouldn’t believe her anymore.

Watching her eyes dart around, Ken finally snapped and pointed at the door, his voice shaking with rage.

“Get the hell out! I never want to see you again!”

Bianca knew he was furious. Seeing that there was no point in pushing it, she left in silence, her head down.

After she was gone, Ken stepped forward and clutched my hand, his voice full of regret.

“Linette, I’m so sorry. She fooled me. Please forgive me this once, okay?”

I didn’t look at him. I just closed my eyes and pretended I couldn’t hear a thing.

Doctors and nurses rushed in soon after.

They carefully cut away my bandages. The burns underneath had worsened. They cleaned the wounds, drained the blisters, and wrapped me up again.

Ken stood nearby, wiping his tears nonstop.

Suddenly, the heart monitor let out a sharp, piercing beep.

Ken froze, staring at the screen in terror, then ran out, screaming for help.

At that moment, my body felt strangely light. Without thinking, I followed him outside. Just as I reached for him, my hand passed straight through his body.

I froze, then turned around.

On the hospital bed lay another me, wrapped completely in bandages.

That was when I understood.

I was dead.

I died in the fire I started myself.

A sense of calm washed over me. I had wanted this for a long time.

Only death brought real freedom.

I stood quietly beside Ken as he collapsed beside the bed, pulling my body into his arms like he had lost his mind.

Tears fell onto my burned skin.

“Linette, how could you leave me? I already admitted I was wrong. Why wouldn’t you give me another chance?”

Watching him cry like that, I stepped closer and sighed softly.

“I know you love Bianca,” I said gently. “So I made room for you. Isn’t that better?”

They were already together, anyway. Why put on this show now?

It didn’t matter anymore. I was dead.

A doctor looked at Ken with regret. “I’m sorry, Mr. Bowen. We did everything we could.”

Ken acted like he couldn’t hear him. He shoved the doctors out and dropped to one knee beside the bed.

I stood there silently, watching. What was the point of this now?

He couldn’t see me. He just kept touching my face on the bed.

Wiping his tears, he spoke in a broken voice, “I’m sorry. I really didn’t know Bianca would do something like this. If I had known, I never would’ve had anything to do with her. Wait for me, okay? I’ll get justice for you myself!”

His eyes hardened with resolve.

He stood up and made a phone call, ordering the butler to bring the three girls to the hospital immediately.

When I heard him mention the girls, my expression softened.

They were the last proof that I had ever existed in this world.

But they didn’t like me. They were close to Bianca instead.

So it was probably better not to see them.

A little over ten minutes later, the three girls rushed into the hospital room.

Carly looked at my body with open impatience. “Dad, how did you fall for this again? She’s probably just pretending to be dead.”

Trista walked over and poked my arm. “It looks pretty convincing this time. She must’ve really gone all out.”

Queenie didn’t understand, but she nodded along. “They’re right. I don’t believe Mom’s dead!”
