When Love Burned to Nothing Chapter 05

When Love Burned to Nothing Chapter 05

Ken froze. He asked into the phone, disbelief written all over his face, “What did you just say? Linette set her house on fire? Why would she do that?”

With a deep frown, he headed straight to the hospital.

Bianca stayed close beside him, deliberately stirring things up.

“Is it possible that she’s just jealous of us? Maybe it’s just a trick to get you to give in to her!”

As she spoke, she pressed herself against his back, her body brushing his spine.

But Ken felt restless. Something about all of this felt wrong. He hadn’t expected things to go this far.

When they arrived at the hospital, he finally saw the person lying in the bed.

I was already awake. Burns of different sizes covered my body, the pain dull but constant.

I stared blankly at the ceiling. I had already made peace with dying. I had no family left in this world. What was the point of staying alive, anyway?

Ken looked at the blisters and burns on my skin and couldn’t find the words.

Panic flickered across his face before he even realized it himself.

“Linette, are you okay?”

Just then, a nurse called for a family member to sign some paperwork, so Ken stepped out.

Before leaving, he asked Bianca to stay and watch over me.

She smiled sweetly. “Don’t worry. I’ve got this.”

Once the room was empty except for the two of us, Bianca’s smile vanished.

She walked over and sneered down at me. “Linette, I really underestimated you. You’re pretty good at playing the victim. I’ll tell you right now. I won’t let you walk out of this hospital alive. Ken is mine. He always has been.”

She picked up a bowl of steaming chicken broth from the table and poured it straight onto my burns.

“Let me help you clean the wound.”

The pain tore through me. I glared at her, furious.

But my body wouldn’t move. My throat was burned so badly that I couldn’t even make a sound.

Suddenly, the door flew open.

Ken stormed in, his face dark with anger.

Bianca hurriedly set the bowl down and put on a flattering smile.

“Ken, are you back already?”

He didn’t look at her. He pressed the call button by my bed instead. Then, he took a tissue and gently blotted the dampness from my bandages.

Realizing he had noticed something was wrong, Bianca immediately switched expressions, her eyes filling with fake tears.

“I was just trying to feed Linette. She started struggling and splashed the hot broth on me,”

She rolled up her sleeve, revealing a patch of reddened skin.

I stared at her arm. That burn was self-inflicted, done just to cover her tracks.

This woman knew I couldn’t speak. She was framing me on purpose.

Just as panic set in and I didn’t know what to do, Ken suddenly turned and slapped Bianca hard across the face.

“Do you think I’m an idiot? She already tried to kill herself, and you still wouldn’t leave her alone. You push her every day, fine, but she’s this badly hurt. If those wounds get infected, that’s on you!”

His whole body shook with rage. If he hadn’t come back when he did, I might have died quietly without anyone ever knowing what really happened.

The doctors would’ve blamed it on complications from severe burns.

I would’ve died without even a shred of dignity.
