He Signed Divorce Papers Then Found My Wedding Photo Chapter 07

If I had a choice, I would never speak of that night again.

A year ago, Adrian had taken Sienna Prescott on a trip to Southport.

I worked overtime until late that night. On my way home, I realized someone was following me.

At first, I thought it was just some creep, so I called Adrian, hoping that if he picked up and talked to me for a few minutes, it would scare the man away.

But Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he sent me a message with only a few words.

[We’ll talk when I get back.]

A cold numbness spread through my body.

The person behind me kept following closely, and I was too terrified to think. I called the police at once.

But Logan Whitmore arrived even faster than they did.

Just as the creep raised a knife and lunged at me, Logan stepped between us. In just a few moves, he had the man pinned down.

I crouched beside a street tree and sobbed uncontrollably. Logan looked over at me and said in a steady, calming voice, “It’s all right. You’re safe now.”

“Be careful walking alone at night. This guy’s dangerous. I’ve been tracking him for days.”

I was too frightened and too hurt to remember clearly how he called his colleagues nearby and had them take the man back to the station.

All I remembered was that he eventually helped me to my feet, and his voice was the first thing that made me feel safe.

“I’ll take you home.”

I followed closely beside him and didn’t dare look back, tears falling silently the whole way.

On the way back, Adrian finally called me.

“I was at the hospital. Sienna suddenly had stomach pain. What happened?”

I shouted into the phone.

“Do you know I almost died? Is she more important than I am?”

Adrian sounded impatient, almost weary.

“Why do you always make everything sound so serious?”

“If you’re well enough to yell at me on the phone, that means you’re fine. You panic over every little thing.”

I was so angry that I hung up.

Adrian never called again.

When we reached the entrance of my apartment complex, Logan finally asked, “You have a boyfriend? And he was comfortable letting you come home alone this late?”

My voice was thick with tears.

“He went on a trip with his secretary. He doesn’t care about me at all.”

“I see.”

Logan didn’t say much. He only smiled, took out his phone, and added me to his contacts.

“Call me next time you’re in danger. I’m out on assignments often, so I can usually get there faster than most people.”

After what had just happened, it was hard to refuse that kind of kindness.

Adrian’s indifference and Logan’s warmth formed such a sharp contrast that I finally began to wonder what that marriage had ever given me.

I didn’t sleep at all that night.

Early the next morning, I sent Adrian a message and asked for a divorce.

By the time he came home, my luggage was already at the door, and the divorce papers were on the table.

“You’ve thought this through? You want a divorce just because I missed your call?”

Adrian raised a hand and rubbed his brow.

“I had something going on too. It wasn’t like I ignored you on purpose.”

“Sign it.”

I kept my face blank.

He watched me for a while, then picked up the pen with a faint look of resignation and signed the divorce papers.

After that, he raised an eyebrow and asked, “How long are you planning to keep this up? A week? Half a month?”

A lifetime.

I kept that answer in my heart and never said it out loud.

Looking back now, I probably should have told him everything clearly then. Maybe so much of what followed could have been avoided.

At the police station, after Adrian heard the whole story, he looked at me in disbelief.

“You expect me to believe something that ridiculous?”

“That creep is still in prison right now. Believe it or not, that is the truth.”

I looked at him calmly.

“Adrian Lancaster, I’m pressing charges.”

“Anything else you want to say, you can say it to the judge.”
