Boyfriend Dumped Me for “Heiress” BFF? Your New Girl Calls ME “Boss” Every Day! Chapter 18

Carter’s lips trembled. He tried to speak. Nothing came out.

He just collapsed inward. Deflated.

I looked at him and felt the last bit of warmth inside me die.

This was the guy who used to handle me like I was made of glass. Who gave me everything soft he had.

Now? Just some broken shell. Too beaten down to even defend himself.

But I wasn’t going soft. Not now. Not ever.

Because I knew-one moment of weakness would be like twisting the knife all over again.

“Carter.”

I turned away.

“You didn’t lose everything because of me. You lost it because of you.”

I kept walking.

“Don’t contact me again. I don’t owe you anything. And I’m never looking back.”

I left him there.

One Year Later

Ethan proposed on a rainy evening.

He drove me up to this lookout point. City lights glowing through the drizzle.

He parked. Turned off the engine.

Then he pulled out a navy velvet box and dropped to one knee.

“Mia.”

His voice cut through the rain and distant traffic.

“I used to think promises were too heavy. That I couldn’t carry them.”

He paused.

“But now I know. I want every day with you to be the promise.”

His hand shook slightly. But his eyes? Steady as hell.

“Will you marry me?”

I looked at him-this man who stayed when I had nothing left.

Tears came out of nowhere.

I nodded. Voice shaking but sure.

“Yes.”

The Wedding

We got married that spring. Small ceremony. Just family and close friends.

I wore a simple white dress. Dad walked me down the aisle.

Ethan stood at the end in a perfectly tailored suit. Eyes so warm they melted every cold thing inside me.

When we exchanged rings, his fingers trembled.

He leaned in close.

“Mia. Thank you for giving me this chance.”

I smiled through tears.

Right then, all that old pain? Gone.

The officiant pronounced us married. Everyone clapped. Cheers all around.

I turned to share the moment with Ethan-

And my eyes caught something at the church entrance.

A figure. Standing in shadow.

Wearing an old, ill-fitting suit. Hair a mess. Unshaven. So thin he looked hollow.

He clutched a beat-up briefcase. Stared at us with empty eyes.

That face-the one that used to make my heart race, then later made it break-now just looked destroyed. Like some homeless guy who wandered in off the street.

Carter.

My chest tightened. I froze for half a second.

That face. It overlapped with memories of who he used to be-and shattered them all over again.

Ethan noticed. Followed my gaze.

His jaw tightened barely. Then he pulled me closer. Blocked my view with his body.

He smiled down at me. Soft. Reassuring..

“Don’t look. Let’s keep going.”

I took a breath. Looked away.

Back to Ethan’s eyes. Warm. Safe.

Yeah. That part of my life? Over.

I tightened my grip on his arm. Gave him my biggest smile.

That shadow behind me-Carter looking like some broken beggar-stayed in the past.

Where it belonged.

We walked forward. Into our future.

And I never looked back.
