We’d met at some work event the week before.

“Mia?”

He waved his helmet at me. “Damn, you work late.”

I stopped. “Wait-how’d you know I’d be here?”

“You mentioned it at that party. Said you lived nearby.”

He was straddling his bike. Patted the seat behind him.

“Come on. I’ll drop you at the subway. These lights are all busted. You shouldn’t be walking alone.”

“I’m fine. Really.” But my feet didn’t move.

He smirked.

“What? Bike too dirty for you? Or you think I’m gonna kidnap you?”

I shot him a look. He cracked up.

“I’m kidding! Look, if you don’t wanna ride, whatever. I’ll at least walk you to the main street so you can catch a cab.”

Something in me caved.

“…Just don’t drive like a maniac.”

I climbed on. My arms went around his waist automatically. Wind roared past.

His voice cut through, teasing.

“Saw you booking it out of that building earlier. Looked like you were running from a crime scene.”

After that? He just kept showing up.

Every Friday I’d walk out of work and there he’d be. Leaning against the wall like he owned the place.

Helmet in hand. That stupid grin on his face.

“Mia. Another all-nighter? You’re gonna burn out.”

I started getting ready before leaving work. Checking my reflection. Heart doing backflips when he’d say shit like “that color looks good on you.”

I’d watch him ride off and realize I was staring way too long.

Then I got promoted.

My team went out to celebrate. By the time we wrapped up, it was past one in the morning. I stumbled out clutching

my certificate, freezing, realizing I hadn’t even texted him.

My phone buzzed.

A location. From Carter. Right across the street.

He was waiting. Pulled his helmet off when he spotted me.

“Big night?”

I showed him the certificate. His whole face lit up.

“Holy shit, Mia! That’s amazing!”

He paused. “Get on. I gotta show you something.”

He took me to this spot by the river.

City lights everywhere. Like the whole world was glowing.

He cut the engine. We just sat.

Then he turned to me. His ears were bright red.

“Mia, I… I don’t just wanna keep giving you rides.”

My heart slammed against my ribs. I tried to sound casual.

“Yeah? So what do you want?”

He looked right at me.

“I wanna be with you. Like, actually with you. Forever.”

He pulled out this tiny box. Silver ring inside. Nothing fancy.

“Bought this with my first real paycheck. It’s not much, but… I wanted to give you something that meant something.”

I looked at him. Nervous. Hopeful. Real.

I held out my hand.

“Yeah, Carter. Let’s do this.”

That night the wind felt warm. When he kissed me, everything clicked into place.

After that, I went all in.

Helped him build his company from scratch. Stuck with him through hell.

He was barely surviving back then. Drowning in work. Stress eating him alive.

But he always had energy for me.

He’d be living off instant ramen and zero sleep, but he’d still bring me real food. Remember every little thing I liked.

He poured everything into me.

I thought we were solid. That as long as I had his back, nothing could break us.

I never thought he’d fuck someone else.

That he’d give her what used to be mine. That he’d go to another woman when shit got hard.

That he’d look at her the way he used to look at me.

And I definitely didn’t think that when I caught him the night before our wedding, he’d tell me he was choosing Jade.

My pain? My anger? My begging?

He looked at me like I was some unhinged psycho.

Called me crazy. Said I was embarrassing.

That’s when it hit me.

He didn’t just cheat.

He’d stopped loving me a long time ago.
