Blake’s face goes bright red.

He slaps Summer hard.

“This is all YOUR fault, you bitch!”

His voice cracking now, almost screaming.

“You’re a housekeeper’s daughter and you dressed better than Willow! That’s why I believed you!”

He’s still yelling.

“I was just messing around with you! I always loved Willow-always!”

I look down at Summer’s clothes.

Designer jeans. Cashmere sweater. Cartier bracelet.

I laugh.

But it’s not funny.

I treated her like family my whole life.

Gave her everything I had so she wouldn’t feel less-than.

And she used it all to stab me in the back.

Dad’s jaw tightens.

His eyes move between Summer and Blake. Cold as ice.

“One of you was my daughter’s best friend. Someone she trusted.”

“The other was her boyfriend. Someone she begged me to help.”

His voice drops lower.

“And you both spent four years humiliating her?”

He turns to the head butler.

“Maria failed to raise her daughter properly. Collect every cent the Sinclairs spent on Summer over the last fifteen years. Kick them both out.”

“Fire the rest of the staff too. They can’t even tell who their employer is.”

His voice gets sharper.

“And put the word out-anyone who hires former Sinclair staff is making an enemy of this family.”

Everyone on their knees goes ghost-white.

They know what that means.

No job in the city. Maybe the whole state.

Voices start rising from the foyer.

Begging. Pleading.

Security’s dragging Blake out now. He’s still talking.

“Willow-please-don’t listen to her! We had four years together-”

Then a crack. Someone hit him.

Sounds like the butler.

Summer sees my face.

Knows there’s no coming back from this.

She starts screaming,

“You’ve always been better than me, right, Willow?! Fine! You wanna know the truth?!”

Her voice climbs higher.

“Blake trashed you to my face! Said he loved me! At least I win there!”

She’s laughing now. Hysterical.

“You can have all the money and power you want-you’ll never get real love!”

“You’ll spend your whole life trapped in some cold arranged marriage-”

Maria clamps a hand over her mouth.

“Shut UP.”

Hissing now.

“The Sinclairs were good to us. I made one stupid mistake helping you. And you still won’t stop digging us deeper!”

Security clears everyone out.

Suddenly the room’s silent.

Dad walks over.

Puts his hand on my head. Gentle.

“Sweetheart. I’m so sorry.”

I should cry.

I want to cry.

But nothing comes.

Just this hollow ache in my chest.

Dad sighs. Looks at me for a long time.

“If you don’t want to marry the Ashford boy, I’ll cancel it.”

Preston?

I think about the hospital.

How he brought me breakfast every morning. Something different every time.

I force a smile.

“Dad, don’t cancel it.”

“Preston’s… he’s good.”

My voice cracks a little.

“I just-I think I need to get out of here for a while.”

Next day I book a flight to California.

Standing on the boardwalk in Santa Monica.

Crowds everywhere. Street performers. Tourists taking selfies.

And for the first time in weeks, I can breathe.

Turns out I can travel alone.

Doesn’t kill me.

I pull up my old itinerary-the one I made for Blake and Summer’s trip.

Follow it myself now.

Venice Beach. Griffith Observatory. Coffee shops in Silver Lake.

When I get tired, I sit down. Listen to random people talk.

Turns out everyone’s got problems.

Not just me.

Rounding a corner near the pier.

I see him.

Blake.

I freeze for half a second.

Then I just… walk past him.

Like he’s a stranger.

His hand grabs my arm.

I turn around.

His eyes are red.

He’s staring at me like I’m the only thing in the world.
