“He wants me to come? Does he still think he’s the big CEO?” 

I grabbed the jacket Jordan handed me and laughed. I didn’t go see him. But he still got a letter to me. I didn’t even read it. Told Jordan to burn it. 

I won’t lie, I hadn’t completely cut him out of my heart. The boy he used to be? He’d always be a light in my chest. 

I was afraid of falling for him again. But I wasn’t that dumb little girl anymore. I wasn’t going to lose my head over love. 

Chase started trying to reach me every way he could. Weird 

postcards. Calls that got magically transferred. 

He annoyed me so much I finally had to go see him. 

He’d lost weight. His hair was long. The man who always 

cared about appearances hadn’t even shaved. 

But when he saw me, his eyes lit right up. 

“Harper! You came!” 

For a second, just a second, I saw that boy again. Standing 

outside in the snow or the rain, waiting for me. 

Bright eyes. A smile that showed his sharp little canines. 

But the man in front of me was different. 

Time had carved him. Or maybe just given him a kind of 

mature polish. 

Right now he was gray and faded. Only that first glance was 

like before. 

I didn’t stand too close. I kept my distance. 

“I know what Brittany did. You didn’t hurt her, did you?” 

“She’s just a young girl. And she has a kid. She panicked.” 

He was still thinking about her. 

I laughed coldly and pulled a chair over. “I’m not going to kill her.” 

“But she’s not going to live the rich housewife life. Not a dime from me.” 

“Maybe if she’s lucky, she can find another massage therapist job. Maybe snag another sugar daddy.” 

Chase choked on his words. His expression got complicated. 

“You went out of your way to come here for her?” I pressed. 

“No. I also wanted to say I’m sorry.” 

“I made some connections from inside. If you help me from out there, I can get out soon. Then we’ll go back to how it 

was. Okay?” 

He pressed against the glass partition. His eyes turned red. 

“Too late.” 

“Don’t contact me again.” 

I turned and walked away. My hand slipped into my pocket and hit pause on the recording. 

Five minutes later, everything he just said was in the hands 

of the police. 

Everyone who helped him in there, they’d all go down too. 

While I was at it, I cleaned house. Everyone at the company 

who’d opposed me was out. 

“You don’t even have a marriage certificate with Chase. Who 

says you’re telling the truth?” one of them challenged. 

Another chimed in, “Yeah, exactly. He never posted anything about you. So what gives you the right to take over?” 

Jordan stood by, worried and excited at the same time. 

The moment I got back, she ran up. “Harper! You’re back! I didn’t know you were Mrs. Vance. Sorry, I mean, Ms. Quinn!” 

But the situation wasn’t good. 

Everyone wanted a bite of the dying Vance Industries. 

I didn’t panic. I pulled out a document. “I’m not standing 

here because I’m Chase Vance’s wife.” 

“I’m standing here for one reason. Me. Harper Quinn.”
