Chase was gone. 

Brittany didn’t run after him crying, which was weird. 

She stood in the corner with Ethan, eyes darting everywhere. 

After court, I watched her slip through the crowd and follow 

the judge into the back. 

What was left was a complete mess. 

But it was still a thousand times better than leaving with 

nothing. And I knew I could handle it. 

I had Jordan keep an eye on Brittany. Didn’t want her pulling 

anything else. 

Late that night, Jordan sent me an emergency alert. 

“Harper, oh my god, Brittany transferred all of Vance 

Industries‘ assets to offshore accounts! She’s about to fly to 

the UK right now!” 

“I’ve been watching her this whole time. I don’t know when 

she pulled this off.” 

Live feed from the Vance private airport. 

Brittany had a suitcase in one hand and Ethan in the other. 

She looked up, right at the camera’s red light, like she knew. 

The video showed her smirk. Her lips moved without sound. 

“You lose.” 

Jordan was pacing, panicked. 

“Harper, what do we do? We can’t get anyone there in time. 

And the old guard at the company won’t listen to you. 

They’re saying the whole thing should go to Brittany and her 

son.” 

Now I knew why Brittany had gone to the judge. She wanted him to give her the papers. 

Greedy. She wanted the money and control of Vance 

Industries from outside the country. 

Brittany and Chase had a valid marriage certificate. Ethan was his biological son. 

In the old–school board’s eyes, she had a better claim than 

1. me. Plus, a woman with no education and a little kid was 

way easier to manipulate than I was. 

Too bad for her. She underestimated me. 

The next second, the bodyguard who’d been helping with her luggage grabbed her wrist. 

The pilot stepped out and separated her from Ethan. 

“What are you doing?! I hired you! Don’t you want the 

money?” 

They looked at each other and smiled. Didn’t answer. 

Brittany thrashed. “Did Harper Quinn put you up to this? 

Whatever she’s paying, I’ll give you ten times.” 

The guard taped her mouth shut. 

My car pulled up to the airport right then. 

“She wanted everyone to watch her catch a mistress. How 

about I give everyone a show instead?” 

Brittany snapped her head toward me. 

I smiled, copying her old move, shoving my phone in her 

face. “Let’s go with ‘Every Rat for Itself. You really think 

Chase isn’t gonna find out what you did? How hard do you 

think he’ll come after you?” 

Brittany’s eyes almost popped out. She shook her head 

frantically. 

Chase had held power in Oakhaven for years. Getting rid of 

her would be nothing. 

Comments rolled in on the stream. 

“Whoa, am I allowed to watch this?” 

“Turns out she’s the side piece! Ran out of luck, huh?” 

I watched Brittany squirm for a minute. Then I got serious. 

“Take her away.” 

I’d built connections alongside Chase for years. She couldn’t 

even imagine the network I had. 

The second she walked into that security company, even in 

disguise, someone told me. People still fought to cash in my 

favors. 

Brittany’s face was pure fury. But the guards had her pinned. 

Nothing she could do. 

Ethan curled into a ball, too scared to speak. 

After a while, Jordan leaned in and whispered, “Chase knows. 

He says he wants to see you.”
