He Built A Garden For Her Flowers But Only To Help His Secret Love Win A Prize Chapter 04

The family doctor came many times. He gave me several injections of something I couldn’t identify.

He said it was for my own good, but every time after I got one, I’d just sleep for hours, completely weak all over.

He was going to trap me here forever, turn me into a useless cripple, so I could be controlled to do whatever they wanted.

It wasn’t until the day before Cloris left for the international competition that he showed up in my room again.

“I’m not going anymore. Can’t be bothered. You should be happy now, Charles.”

The needle that was about to go into my arm froze.

The two men exchanged a look, and Charles nodded slightly. The doctor said, “Mrs. Gordon doesn’t need the injection for now. Just let her rest for a few more days, Mr. Gordon.”

Charles said smoothly, “Alright. You can go.”

We didn’t argue, didn’t scream. “Help me sit up, will you?” I said calmly.

Charles helped me up against the headboard. I stared at him quietly. “Charles, how many years has it been since we met?”

“Thirty.”

I smiled and shook my head. “No. Thirty-one.”

We knew each other before we were even born, when we were still in our mothers’ bellies. Back then everyone said we were the perfect match, soulmates, childhood sweethearts.

But the hand life dealt us had long been torn to shreds.

“Why are you bringing this up?”

“No reason. Charles, can you tell me—what did you love about me? Why did you marry me?”

He said, “You’ve asked this question for decades. Aren’t you tired of it?”

“So you’re tired of me, then?”

He opened his mouth, caught off guard. “Why are you asking this out of the blue?”

He didn’t even have the guts to admit he cheated on me. Charles, you coward.

“Charles, you and those flower seeds are the only two things that ever mattered to me in my decades of life.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“I remember I told you before—if one day you stopped loving me, if you got tired of me, we could get a clean divorce and go our separate ways. Why do you have to trap me like this?” Trapping me here like a useless invalid, chained to a bed forever.

“What nonsense are you talking about? I’ve never wanted to divorce you!” His face changed.

I knew he’d never admit he cheated in front of me.

It would feel like betraying himself—betraying the boy he used to be, the one who held me when we were kids and cried that he’d love me forever.

I didn’t even care if he admitted it or not. I’d already seen everything with my own eyes.

“Do you remember, when we were little, I told you what my dream was when I grew up? Do you remember what it was?”

I sat up in bed, a soft smile on my face, and looked at him.

That soft smile made him panic. “Your dream was to become a flower researcher like your parents, right?” He could tell I was acting off, and his eyes were full of wariness.

But he knew I already figured out everything. I just hadn’t called him out on it yet.

He handed me the medicine. “Take this. After you take it, get some good sleep, don’t think about anything. You never have to be afraid I’ll leave you. I promise, I could never leave you.”

“Will it really make me better if I take it?”

“It will.”

I suddenly laughed. “Even if it’s poison, I’ll take it if you hand it to me.”

“What kind of nonsense is that?”

I looked at the medicine. “I’ll ask you one last thing. Why all these years, you’ve never brought up having kids?”

“Savannah?”

“You haven’t called me that name in a long time, either.”

He was silent.

I smiled, took the medicine directly.

Charles felt something was off, but he couldn’t put his finger on what it was right then.

He lit a cigarette and headed for the door.

But as he thought about what I’d said, about the smile I’d had at the end, something clicked.

“Charles! My dream growing up isn’t to grow flowers like my parents. Their dream isn’t my dream. My dream is to be your wife! I want to travel every corner of the world with you, leave our footprints everywhere! Even hundreds and thousands of years from now, we’d have stood right where so many other people stood, and seen the same sights!”

Charles froze mid-step. The nanny came running after him, breathless. “Sir, something’s wrong! After Mrs. Gordon took that medicine, she started having terrible stomach pain and coughing up nonstop blood! You have to come back quick!”

He spun around. At the same time, a huge explosion roared from the hillside villa.

In an instant, raging fire swallowed everything.
