When I opened my eyes again, Ethan and I were staring at each other.

Joy flashed through his eyes. Without giving me any chance to resist, he pulled me hard into his arms.

“Sophie, we have our own child!”

I froze.

For a moment, I even forgot to push him away.

After all, I had gone through thirty rounds of IVF and still never conceived. I had long stopped hoping for a baby.

Something stirred faintly in my heart.

I was just about to speak when he continued.

“Chloe has always wanted a child. After you have this baby, we can give it to her to raise.”

In an instant, my body went cold.

“What did you say?”

Ethan frowned, as if he was unhappy with my reaction.

“You know Chloe is afraid of pain. She likes kids so much. Just think of it as helping her out.”

As he spoke, he pulled out his phone and casually transferred five hundred thousand dollars into my account. Then he kissed me.

“Be good. Listen to me.”

I shoved him away, my voice trembling with disbelief.

“Ethan! What do you think I am?”

He didn’t answer.

He only frowned at me, as if he couldn’t understand why I was being so unreasonable.

After he took a call and left, I raised a shaking hand to my lower belly. Tears rolled down my face.

The child was innocent.

Besides, the doctor had once told me that if I lost a baby, I might never be able to have another.

I had to find a way to protect this child.

I had to cure my mother’s illness and take both of them away from here.

The thought had barely settled when the door was kicked open.

Chloe stood in the doorway with her arms crossed. Behind her were five or six tall, broad men.

Every hair on my body stood on end. I stepped back, trembling.

“What are you going to do?”

Before I could finish, a hand grabbed my hair from behind and threw me hard back onto the bed.

My desperate scream was smothered in my throat.

A tearing pain ripped through me, and something warm slid down my legs.

The men’s laughter mixed with Chloe’s applause.

When everything finally went silent, I lay there like a broken rag doll in a spreading dark stain.

Chloe’s voice drifted into my ear, soft and poisonous.

“Let’s make a bet too. Let’s bet on who Ethan will believe.”

As she spoke, she curled her lips into a smile.

Then she suddenly slapped herself hard across the face.

With red-rimmed eyes, she rushed toward the door and threw herself right into Ethan’s arms as he came in.

“Ethan!”

“Sophie said she would rather die than have this child and give it to me, so right after you left, she called in a group of men…”

She wiped her tears as she shakily held her phone up in front of him.

“She said you cheated on her, so she was going to cheat on you for revenge. She said that would make it fair.”

“Look. I recorded everything. I tried to stop her, and she slapped me.”

The moment Ethan saw the screen, he froze completely.

His pupils slowly widened.

Then he shoved Chloe away, rushed to the bed, and yanked me up. His eyes were scarlet.

“Sophie! Are you out of your mind?”

I opened my mouth, but not a sound came out.

He seemed even more provoked by my ruined state. His jaw clenched.

“Fine. Fine. So this is how you degrade yourself.”

“This is how you get back at me, right?”

“You really know how to hurt me.”

His voice grew louder and louder.

But my vision became blurrier and blurrier.

The last thing I saw before I passed out was Chloe’s victorious smile.
