Even with Silas’s murderous stare boring into him, the stable hand pushed on.

“I was the one who escorted Lady Elara back from Rural Northern County. We were on the road for over a

month, sharing every meal and every moment. What we had went way beyond some master-servant thing.”

“I know my place. She’s way above me. I never let myself dream, so the second we got back to the Estate, I

cut things off completely. I just stood back and watched her get closer to His Highness.”

“Then, two weeks ago, she had her final wedding gown fitting and asked for me to drive the carriage. Alone

together, everything came rushing back. She told me she was drowning in regret. She didn’t want to marry

the Regent. She said it was me. Only me.”

“But she knew it was a royal decree. Backing out would’ve destroyed the whole Voss family. We racked our

brains, and she remembered this rare black snake from back home. Small, fast as lightning, and deadly, one

bite, no surviving it.”

“She sent me racing back to the County to find one, demanding I return before the wedding day to hide it

inside the dowry chest. When they opened the chest, the snake would strike the Regent, and she’d be rid of

the whole thing.”

His voice cracked with emotion. “I rode day and night without stopping. I went through half a dozen horses

just to make it back to the Capital yesterday.”

He slammed his forehead against the floor three times, drawing blood. “But I did all of this on my own. The

blame is mine, nobody else’s. Lady Elara’s already been bitten. She’s paid for it. Please, show her mercy. I’ll pay with my life.”

Before anyone could stop him, he lunged and smashed his head against the wall. Blood splattered

everywhere. He was dead before he hit the ground.

Shocked silence gripped the room. The Voss Estate steward rushed in, stammering, “My lord, the stables are

missing several fast horses. And this hand, he disappeared without a trace for two weeks. The rest of the

staff assumed he’d gone home on leave. We never imagined…”

The servants erupted into whispers. “Can you believe it? Lady Elara, sweet little thing like that, hiding

venomous snakes to kill the Regent?”

“If this had blown up, she would’ve taken the whole Estate down with her. She’s the real snake in the grass.”

Silas’s fists were clenched so tight his knuckles cracked. The Queen Mother looked down at my unconscious form, a flash of undisguised disgust in her eyes.

My parents exchanged a look and bowed deeply to the King. “We didn’t raise our daughter right. This is on us, whatever she did, we’ll answer for it. We’ll accept whatever punishment you see fit.”

Marlowe knelt behind them, the corners of her mouth twitching upward. She was about to step forward and feign comfort while twisting the knife further, but just then, the inner chamber door flew open. The head

physician burst out, overcome with relief. “She’s awake! The princess is awake!”
