When the Ice Refused to Melt Chapter 07

The noise outside snapped Kael out of the shock, if only briefly. 

Those so–called elites were still chatting excitedly, their voices clear through the open door. 

“Now that Miss Wynter’s finally single again, this is our shot!” 

“I wonder what type she’s into? Gotta get myself ready…” 

Their words were gasoline poured over Kael’s already raging 

fire. 

He turned sharply and strode to the door, his cold gaze 

sweeping over every man standing there. The sheer fury 

radiating from him made even seasoned officers instinctively 

fall silent. 

Kael took a deep breath, then spoke each word like a command 

barked on the battlefield. 

“Arden is my wife. She was, she is, and she always will be. 

Anyone who tries to pursue her from this point forward is 

making an enemy of me.” 

A heavy silence followed. 

No one dared to speak. The air in the hallway had frozen solid. 

“Get out!” Kael snapped. 

The crowd dispersed immediately, like frightened animals 

fleeing a predator. 

His chest heaved, and with the divorce paper and the cold box of medication still in hand, Kael stormed to his Jeep. The engine roared to life as he sped off toward the airport like a man possessed. 

Inside the terminal, flight information scrolled across 

screens, loudspeaker announcements echoed above, and the boarding gates loomed ahead. 

But Kael felt strangely calm. 

Somewhere in his mind, a quiet voice whispered: If you can just get on that plane, cross the ocean, maybe… maybe there’s 

still a chance. 

He held his boarding pass and stepped toward security. But just as he did, a young communications officer in full uniform pushed through the crowd and ran up to him. 

The soldier saluted crisply, then handed over a sealed envelope 

stamped URGENT. 

“General Varyn! Emergency telegram from the border. Sudden enemy movement. High command orders you to return 

immediately and lead the response team.” 

Kael’s hand froze mid–air. He looked down at the heavy 

envelope. 

Then, through the glass behind the officer, he saw the plane. 

His plane. Already taxiing onto the runway. 

Its engines screamed. The sound pierced his skull like a taunt. 

This is the price. 

He had once sworn to protect duty, honor, and country with 

his life, but now those same values felt like an iron wall 

standing between him and the only thing he truly wanted. 

He clenched his fists so tightly that his nails drew blood. 

For the first time in his life, the weight of his uniform felt 

unbearable. He was crumbling beneath it. 

Eventually, Kael shut his eyes. When they reopened, they were bloodshot, emotionless, hard. 

He took the envelope, tore it open, scanned the contents, then said in a flat, low voice, “Inform high command. Kael… is returning to active duty.“
