When the Ice Refused to Melt Chapter 06

Meanwhile, Kael had been taking care of Serene around the 

clock for days. He didn’t sleep, didn’t leave her side, until urgent military duties finally forced him away. 

He had just returned to headquarters when he saw a group of familiar colleagues gathered at the door. Their voices were excited, faces glowing with gossip. 

Among them were top air force pilots, commanders, even a few rising stars from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

“Major Varyn! You’re back at the perfect time!” one of the commanders said, grinning from ear to ear. “Tell us the truth, is the report in this paper real?” 

“Yeah, now that you’re no longer tied to Arden, does that mean we can officially go after her?” 

“Kael, she’s gorgeous, bold, and charming. Every guy in Valleria’s been crazy about her. I’ve had feelings for her forever. Only reason I held back was because she was your 

wife. Now, I’m free.” 

“Same here! You better give us a proper introduction, man. 

We’re all locked and loaded.” 

They were laughing and bantering, but every word was like gasoline thrown on a fire inside Kael’s chest. 

He stared at them. The rage rose so fast and so violently, it nearly broke him. 

“Introduction? Pursue her? Compete?” 

His voice dropped to a dangerously cold register. 

“Do you even hear yourselves? Arden is my wife.” 

The laughter died. 

Everyone fell silent. Eyes darted. Confused glances were 

exchanged. 

One of the guys hesitantly held up the newspaper. 

“Kael… you don’t know?” 

He handed it over. Kael snatched it and his eyes locked on the 

front page headline.

His mind went blank. 

Divorced? 

He and Arden… divorced? 

When? How? Why didn’t he know? 

He hadn’t even recovered from the shock when Wynter 

Group’s butler approached, slow and solemn, holding a sealed 

box. 

“Major Varyn,” the butler said, voice heavy, “this is from the 

Chairman. It’s the medication Miss Vale needs.” 

Kael’s head snapped up. 

“The medicine? He actually agreed to hand it over? Why?” 

The butler exhaled. “Because Miss Wynter made a deal.” 

“She agreed to give up all her rights to the Wynter inheritance. In exchange, the Chairman would give you the medicine. She also promised… to never return to Valleria. For the rest of her 

life.” 

The words hit Kael like a hammer to the chest. 

He staggered back, breath caught, vision blurry. 

He shoved past the group of men still standing there, too 

stunned to move. He stormed into the residence like a man 

possessed. 

Inside, everything of Arden’s was gone. The place was sterile, 

eerily clean. 

Only the coffee table remained untouched, with all the gifts he 

had given her carefully placed on top, the jewelry, designer 

clothes, expensive trinkets. 

At the very top was a folded note. 

Kael’s hands trembled as he picked it up. 

In her sharp, familiar handwriting were just a few short lines. 

[Your things, returned. My man doesn’t have room in his 

heart for someone else. You failed.] 

Every word was a slap. It’s hot, loud, and merciless. 

Kael had always excelled in every part of his life. He’d never 

once heard the word “inadequate” until now. 

And the one role he should have taken most seriously, 

husband, was the one where he failed the worst.
