When the Ice Refused to Melt Chapter 08

When the Ice Refused to Melt Chapter 08

Three years passed in the blink of an eye

Kael finally secured a diplomatic military mission that brought him to the Valeron

The schedule was tight, packed with official meetings. But the moment he landed, he used every resource at his disposal to

find Arden’s address and itinerary

She had become an artist

And today, she was holding her first solo exhibition in one of the city’s top galleries downtown

Kael canceled all his afternoon engagements and showed up at the gallery in civilian clothes, well before the opening

He didn’t go in

Instead, he stood quietly beneath the shadows of a column just outside, like a ghost who no longer belonged

A massive promotional banner hung at the entrance: Arden

RebirthSolo Art Exhibition

There she was on the poster. Dressed in a vibrant red gown, dazzling, confident, glowing. Her smile was radiant, carefree, alive, like someone who had finally become her truest self

Kael felt the color hit him like a firebrand

Guests began arriving one after another, mingling and chatting as they walked inside

Kael pulled his cap lower, then followed them in. The gallery

was bright and spacious, filled with Arden’s artwork

The pieces were bold in color, free in form, bursting with

wild energy and emotional depth that felt like a declaration of independence

Each brushstroke screamed of rebirth, of a woman finally

tearing off the chains that had once bound her

Gone was the girl who masked her pain with rebellion and

recklessness

Here stood a woman, unshackled, unafraid, unapologetic

Kael’s eyes scanned each canvas, then froze when they found

her

She stood at the center of the room, surrounded by a small group of admirers

Wearing a crisp white pantsuit, her hair curled loosely over her

shoulders, she held a champagne flute with effortless poise

Her charm was magnetic. People hung on her every word

Men surrounded her

Handsome, successful, polished men, clearly powerful in their

own right. A blond gallery owner was enthusiastically introducing her to a major art critic

A bankertype handed her another glass of champagne with

warm smile

She smiled with effortless grace, carrying herself like someone

born to be the center of attention

Kael remained rooted in place. His boots might as well have

been made of lead

He watched her move through the crowd, light and graceful, as

if she belonged nowhere and everywhere at once, free, happy

and whole

She was doing well. Far better than he had ever imagined

almost painfully so

The realization cut through him slowly, like a dull blade dragging through flesh, tearing him apart from the inside out

He had braced himself for a different Arden, maybe worn down by life, maybe still clinging to the past

He thought if she needed someone, if she still carried pieces of him, he might still have a chance to make things right

But the woman before him, standing tall under a spotlight of her own making, left no room for doubt

She didn’t need him. She never did

He was the one who couldn’t let go.
