“Elara, Nolan’s lost his mind, completely.” Hailey ran over, her face pale.

“He married Sierra, right?” I said calmly.

“Yes. He had a huge argument with my parents, grabbed the ID proof, and ran off. He got the license right away. It’s over… it’s really over.” Hailey looked like she was about to cry.

I wouldn’t be her sister-in-law anymore.

I could already tell it would cause chaos in both families.

“Hailey, I’m going on a trip. Tell everyone not to look for me. I’m fine. And I have Julian.” I had to leave before I

got swarmed.

That day, before the relatives could track me down, I packed a bag and left.

On the way, I called Julian and told him to pack for a trip.

By nightfall, we were on the train, smiling at each other.

“Debater Elara, where are we going?”

“Somewhere fun. We’ll stay for a month.” A month should be long enough to let things cool down.

Julian agreed to everything. We went wherever we wanted, eating, drinking, sleeping, doing whatever made

us happy.

He was a real gentleman. At night, sharing a room, he didn’t dare touch me. He lay stiff as a board.

But I wanted to touch him.

He was so handsome. Who wouldn’t want to?

So on the last night of the trip, lying in the dark, I stretched my foot over to his leg.

He went completely rigid. His breathing changed.

I cleared my throat. “Debater Julian, do you think my feet are cold?”

“Cold…”

“Then warm them up.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Warming them up wasn’t all that got warm.

When the trip ended, we came back.

Julian’s parents couldn’t wait to come home. He went to pick them up, excited. He made plans for us to have

dinner tomorrow so he could officially introduce me.

I was happy to go.

Then I called Hailey to ask what had happened in the past month.

“Elara, you’re finally back. My brother is a wreck. He’s drinking and gambling.” Hailey sighed.

“Really? It’s only been a month.”

“Sierra divorced him. The day after they got the license. It was like a formality. No one understands it.”

“We all thought she wanted money, to be a princess in a rich family. But she filed for divorce the next day and didn’t take a penny.”

“My brother still had feelings for you. He regretted the marriage right away and agreed to the divorce. Afterwards, Sierra told him something, and he just fell apart.”

Hailey was angry and disappointed.

There was some noise on her end, then the phone was snatched away.

Nolan’s sobbing voice came through. “Elara, is that you? I know I messed up… Please come back.”

“How could you forget me? Were you on a mission too? Is that it? Because I abandoned you, you forgot me?”

I didn’t understand.

“Sierra told me. She figured it out. Your mission failed because of me. I’m so stupid. I’m so sorry. Please

come back.”

Nolan was crying hysterically. I felt nothing. I truly didn’t know him.

“I’m already married to Julian. Goodbye.” I turned off my phone and didn’t look back.

I was still in a good mood. I didn’t want to go home, so I took a walk.

Near Madison Plaza, I saw a familiar figure.

Plain clothes, no makeup, handing out flyers with passion and energy.

I stood there watching her. Her smiling face. Her thin body in the sunlight. Her hair blowing in the wind.

And her bright, shiny eyes.

She looked like a tree clinging to a cliff.

A woman like that. She was the one who belonged on that cliff.

I ran over.

She saw me and froze. Then she smiled. “Want a drink? There’s a coffee shop over there. I have a bottle of

wine in my bag.”

“Where did you get wine?”

“Nolan’s house. I was bitter about those seven wasted years, so I took his best bottle.”

Good for her.
