I was curious what the “heroine” of this whole drama actually looked like.

I hadn’t seen Sierra since college, so I was genuinely curious.

I walked over and gestured for Mr. Hartley to calm down.

Nolan met my eyes, then quickly looked away, embarrassed and guilty.

I didn’t care about him. I was watching Sierra.

She looked up nervously, revealing a pale face and those bright, shining eyes.

Her eyes really were astonishingly bright, even brighter than the stars. Even with her colorless face, those

eyes made her a delicate beauty.

In college, she had been plain, dressed in old clothes, and seemed so unsure of herself.

She still seemed unsure of herself, only now she looked even more fragile.

“Sierra Vance. It’s been a while.” I smiled.

Sierra stared at me in confusion.

Nolan spoke up. “Elara, this is all my fault. Don’t blame Sierra. I’ll take her away right now.”

He started pulling her toward the door.

“She looks like she’d blow away in a strong gust. Why are you dragging her all over town?”

“Just let her stay here. The air is clean, and it’s a peaceful place. You can call a private doctor any time.”

“It’s perfect for someone who’s sick.” I made a suggestion.

Sierra looked even more confused.

Nolan wasn’t confused. He was getting angry.

He seemed upset by how reasonable I was being.

He thought I was being sarcastic.

“Elara, what do you want? I said we would get engaged in a month. Why do you have to make a scene?”

“Why are you using Sierra to be passive-aggressive? She doesn’t have much time left. Can’t you just let her be

happy?”

Nolan was getting more and more worked up.

I didn’t understand.

Why was he angry? Wasn’t I just concerned about my former mentee’s health?

She was a terminal cancer patient. How could she handle being dragged around?

“First of all, I’m not being passive-aggressive. Second, I’m not going to marry you in a month because I don’t like you.”

“And finally, I truly, genuinely do not know who you are. Please watch your tone.”

I warned him.

Behind me, everyone was silent.

Even Sierra was quiet.

Nolan exploded. He grabbed Sierra’s hand and marched into the house.

“Fine, Elara. You win. Keep pretending. I’ll take your advice. Sierra should stay here to recover. This is the perfect place for it.”

He was being defiant.

Mr. Hartley shouted, “Nolan, stop right there. Who said you could bring a stranger into this house?”

“Elara did.”
