He Said My Money Stank, So I Let His Career Stink Without It Chapter 09

Tears rolled down his face. 

“For the sake of the past five years, help me. Please help me 

retain the best lawyer. Money doesn’t matter. I can’t go to prison. I absolutely can’t. I studied medicine for more than twenty years. My life can’t be ruined like this.” 

He stared at me, his eyes filled with the desperate pleading of a 

drowning man clutching at the last piece of wreckage. 

The office fell silent, with only the sound of his rough 

breathing filling the room. 

I leaned back in my chair and spoke slowly. 

“Nathaniel, I’ve already hired a lawyer.” 

A flash of joy crossed his eyes. 

“I knew it. You did all this just to make me humble myself. 

Fine, I’ve done it. I’ve let you trample all over my pride. Are you satisfied now? Once this is over, I can agree to marry you. You finally…” 

As he spoke, he tried to come closer. 

Revulsion hit me, and I stepped back at once. 

“Stay away from me. You don’t actually think the lawyer is for 

you, do you? If so, you’ve seriously overestimated yourself.” 

“The research funds you misappropriated will be recovered by the financial crimes unit. But the money you spent from me over the years? You’re going to pay that back too.” 

His body jolted, and his eyes widened. 

“But you liked me for five years. How could you be this cruel? I don’t believe it. You must be doing this because love turned 

into hate.” 

Disbelief washed over me. For the first time, I truly felt I must have been blind for those five years. 

How had I ever thought he was aloof, principled, and 

untouchable? 

Just thinking about it made goose bumps rise all over my skin. 

“The moment you used the resources I gave you to please another woman, then turned around and told me I stank of 

money.” 

“The moment you went online and swore I had shut down a lifesaving project because you rejected me.” 

“From that point on, the only thing I felt for you was disgust.” 

He shook his head violently. 

“No. No, that’s not true. I was angry and confused. I didn’t mean it. Evelyn, forgive me. Give me one more chance.” 

“Say that in court and see whether the law gives you another 

chance.” 

I cut him off and pressed the internal line. 

“Send two security guards up here and escort Mr. Blake out.” 

Security arrived quickly. 

When Nathaniel was seized by the arms and dragged toward 

the door, he completely broke down. 

He struggled and turned back to scream at me, his voice cracking, ugly and desperate. 

“Evelyn, I know I was wrong. Don’t do this to me. You can’t do 

this to me.” 

His voice disappeared behind the elevator doors. 

I quickly drank two cups of hot coffee and muttered under my breath, “Evil spirits, be gone.” 

It took me ten full minutes to finally settle down, and only then did the sick feeling in my chest begin to fade. 

I did not attend Nathaniel’s trial. 

My assistant went in my place. When she came back, she told me Nathaniel had completely fallen apart in court. 

“He cried in front of the judge, said he hadn’t been thinking straight, admitted to most of the charges, and kept saying he was sorry while begging for leniency.” 

My assistant paused. 

“The judge delivered the sentence in court. With multiple charges combined, he received seven years.” 

I nodded to show that I understood. 

When Adrian heard the case was over, he came to congratulate 

1. me. 

He arrived just as my assistant was leaving. 

He placed a small cake on my desk. 

“Ms. Hart, I noticed last time that you seemed to like this 

flavor. This bakery is pretty good, so I thought you might want 

to try it.” 

The cake came at exactly the right time. 

I didn’t pretend to be polite. I opened it in front of him, 

scooped up a bite, and tasted it slowly. 

“It really is good. I like it.” 

Across from me, he tilted his head, his attention resting on 

1. me. Then, blurting out the thought before he could hide it, he said, “I’ll bring you another one next time.” 

I didn’t expose his little intention. I only pressed back a smile. 

“Sure. Then I’ll trouble you, Dr. Hayes.” 

Outside the window, the late–spring sunlight was warm and 

bright, pouring freely into the room until it filled every corner. 

Some people’s spring had ended. 

Mine had only just begun.
