He Said My Money Stank, So I Let His Career Stink Without It Chapter 08

“And what exactly is Dr. Blake to me? Why should I help?” 

I turned and pushed the door open. 

Behind me, Nathaniel’s voice grew farther and farther away. 

“Evelyn! Evelyn, you can’t do this!” 

“I’m begging you.” 

“I was wrong. I know I was wrong.” 

Adrian caught up with me and asked, “Are you okay?” 

I glanced sideways at him, amusement in my eyes. 

“You really are good at arguing.” 

He realized what I was referring to, and the tips of his ears instantly turned red. 

A laugh tugged at me, but I stopped teasing him and strode 

away. 

The news that Nathaniel had been taken away for 

investigation spread through the entire industry that night. 

I saw the official notice on my phone. 

[Nathaniel Blake is currently under investigation for suspected misappropriation of substantial research funds.] 

The comments had completely exploded. 

Some people dug up the house he had bought for his parents. Others found his skiing photos in Switzerland, and some 

screenshotted the statement he had posted earlier. 

The entire comment section kept repeating the same two 

words. [Aged badly.] 

I turned off my phone and stopped looking. 

Over the next few days, one update came after another. 

Lily was found to have fabricated data in multiple papers. Her academic misconduct was confirmed, and her medical school 

publicly announced her expulsion. 

The hospital also terminated her placement. Because the disciplinary notice was public, no other hospital would take 

her in. 

On top of that, I had my lawyer contact her to recover the 

money and benefits she had obtained improperly. 

Afterward, several top–tier journals flagged Nathaniel’s work and began reexamining his previous papers. 

The people who used to hover around Nathaniel came to me 

one after another, all eager to declare that they had cut ties with him long ago. 

Nathaniel, once a star researcher, had become someone 

everyone wanted to distance themselves from. 

Apparently, he and Lily met again later. 

Lily blamed Nathaniel for dragging her down and destroying 

her career and future. 

Nathaniel blamed Lily for giving him terrible advice, causing 

me to abandon him and leaving him in this state. 

One thing led to another, and they started arguing. 

Nathaniel became violent and nearly strangled Lily to death. 

Fortunately, a passerby saw it and called the police. 

Nathaniel ended up spending another three months in jail for 

assault. 

He tried countless times to contact me, even calling my 

private number. 

Unfortunately for him, I never answered unknown numbers, 

so he spent those three months exactly where he belonged. 

A lot happened during those three months as well. 

Adrian’s project progressed smoothly. The preliminary data had just come out, and the trend lines looked excellent. 

Someone knocked on my office door, and secretary to the 

board poked her head in with a broad smile. 

“Ms. Hart, Mr. Warren and Mr. Lawson are here. They said 

they’d like to discuss next quarter’s strategic investment with you. Would you like to see them?” 

Four months ago, these were the same two men who had 

yelled at me over the phone, calling me reckless and accusing 

me of ignoring the bigger picture. 

“Take them to the small conference room. I’ll be there in ten 

minutes.” 

The meeting lasted less than half an hour. 

The two board members wore pleasant smiles the entire time. 

As they flipped through Adrian’s team report and the company’s soaring stock chart from the past few days, they 

did not raise a single objection. 

After seeing them off, I had just returned to my office when the internal line rang. 

The young woman at the front desk sounded nervous. 

“Ms. Hart, downstairs… Dr. Blake wants to see you. He says it’s urgent, and we can’t stop him.” 

In the company reception area, Nathaniel was wearing a 

wrinkled gray jacket. His hair was messy, his face unshaven, and he paced back and forth in agitation. 

“Send him up.” 

Five minutes later, Nathaniel rushed into my office. 

“Evelyn.” 

When he spoke, his voice was painfully hoarse and thick with 

tears. 

“You have to save me. You’re the only one who can save me 

now.” 

I leaned back in my office chair, my gaze cold. 

“I know I was wrong. I really do.” 

He staggered forward and braced his hands on the edge of my desk, his knuckles whitening with force. 

“It was Lily. She seduced me. She kept getting in my head, telling me I deserved to enjoy myself, that I deserved the best. I was taken in by her.”
