No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 05

No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 05

Corvin rushed to Elara’s place and helped her into the dress.

She was standing in front of him in a wine-red designer gown, gentle and pretty and perfectly put together.

But for some reason, Lyra’s face flashed across his mind.

If Lyra had been the one wearing it, she would have looked even more breathtaking.

Before he could stop himself, he stepped aside and sent her a message: [The designer finished the nursery plans. Once we make the mate bond next month, I’ll have the room done.]

The message sent, then failed to go through almost immediately.

He froze.

Then he sent another and another.

None of them went through.

He grabbed his phone and called her, but all he got was a cold automated tone.

He stood up so fast his chair nearly scraped backward.

He was about to call for his beta when Elara slipped her arm around his and said softly, “What’s wrong? Lyra

blocked you?”

‘Don’t panic. You just told her today that you were breaking the mate bond with her. Of course she’s throwing

a fit.”

‘That’s how she always is. Deleting, blocking, waiting for you to come soothe her.”

“If you ask me, Lyra’s just too hot-tempered. Leave her alone for a few days and she’ll come crying back to

you on her own.”

Then she rose onto her toes and kissed him, even catching his lower lip gently between her teeth.

“You promised me,’ she murmured. “This month, you’re supposed to stay with me. You can’t change your

mind just because she’s throwing a tantrum.”

His attention was dragged away from the phone almost at once.

The more he thought about it, the more reasonable Elara’s words seemed.

After all, every time Lyra got upset, she acted like this.

All bark, no bite.

And besides, she loved him too much to really leave.

On Elara’s birthday, he threw her a lavish party.

In front of all the guests, he got down on one knee and proposed.

For just an instant, in the shifting lights, he thought he saw Lyra standing there in white, smiling at him.

Years ago, when he had still been the unwanted illegitimate son of Nighthowl Pack, their wedding had been

painfully simple.

They had gotten married in a free church because they couldn’t afford anything else.

Even the rings had only been plain silver bands that cost less than a thousand dollars.

All at once, he remembered the promise he had made.

That one day, when he had truly made something of himself, he would give Lyra the grandest, most dazzling

mating ceremony imaginable.

But so many years had passed, and he had never fulfilled it.

A strange unease rose in his chest.

“Corvin, I do!”

Elara’s voice snapped him back to the present.

The woman in front of him was draped in luxury, from her designer dress to her heavy jewelry, with gold

everywhere.

He frowned slightly as he looked at all the glittering metal.

When had Elara, who used to seem so soft and modest, started looking this gaudy?

The party ended in a sky full of fireworks.

The next morning, she practically dragged him to forge the mate bond.

Afterward, Corvin bought her a brand-new pack house.

“You’ll live here from now on, he told her. “Don’t go back to her pack house anymore. Lyra won’t be happy if

she sees you there.’

Elara’s expression stiffened for half a second.

Then her eyes reddened right on cue. “Did I do something wrong? Are you upset with me?”

Seeing tears well in her eyes, his tone softened again.

‘Don’t overthink it. I can’t leave you living there as a housekeeper forever. I told you I’d protect you.”

‘For this one month, whatever you want to do, I’ll do it with you. All right?”

Only then did she throw her arms around him and nod.

A moment later, she looked up at him carefully and tested the waters.

“Corvin… I want to be your mate forever. Not just for one fleeting month.”

His whole body went rigid.

When he spoke again, his voice had gone cold, “Elara. Don’t say things you shouldn’t.”

The resentment in her eyes flashed by so quickly most people would have missed it.

But she still pushed. “Why not? Because Lyra is carrying your pup?”

She pouted, waiting for him to comfort her.

But this time, her trick failed.

“It’s late,” he said flatly. “Get some sleep. I’ll come by tomorrow.”

Then, after a pause, he added, “Don’t reach for a place that isn’t yours.”

He pulled her hand away and turned to leave.

Panicking, she threw herself at him from behind and wrapped both arms around his waist.

‘I was wrong. I’m sorry. Please. You promised me. Just this one month, let me be selfish.”

‘After that, I’ll take whatever you give me. The mistress, someone on the sidelines, anything. I’ll take it gladly.

Corvin, I just love you too much.”

Her tears soaked into the back of his shirt.

And just like that, his heart softened again.

He told himself it was only one month.

Lyra had already become more understanding.

By the time he went back and coaxed her a little, everything would go back to normal.
