Liam was about to say something else when someone cut him off.

Lucas came running from across the street like a madman and tackled him to the ground.

“Get lost! Don’t ever come near her again.”

Liam’s face had softened for a moment. When he saw Lucas, it turned dark again.

He pointed at Lucas and sneered. “Ava, this is why you’ll never measure up to Natalie.”

“She’s been gone for years, and she’s still thinking about me.”

“You’ve been back a few days, and you’ve already found someone else.”

I couldn’t be bothered to argue. I turned away.

Lucas knew me better than anyone. He had security throw Liam out.

Then he handed me a file and tried to sound casual. “Here’s every dirty thing Liam’s ever

done.”

I’ll make sure he never gets back up if you want.”

I looked at him in surprise. I didn’t know he’d been working on this.

Liam had definitely done illegal things. When he was just starting out in L.A., he couldn’t resist to earn benefits in dirty ways.

But he’d covered it all up after his business grew.

It would take a huge effort to dig it up.

And if Liam found out, it would mean making an enemy of him.

The Vance family wasn’t as powerful as it was ten years ago. But under Liam, it was still dangerous.

Making an enemy of him was a bad move.

I couldn’t let Lucas take that risk.

So I shook my head. “Lucas, no. He’s too powerful. Going against him won’t end well.”

But Lucas had figured out his feelings over the past few days.

It wasn’t just friendship.

He looked at me, serious. “Ava, maybe you’re not ready to accept this.”

“But I’ll always be here. This isn’t about fighting the Vance family. I’m saving someone who

matters to me.”

Lucas was introvert. He never spoke his mind easily.

He’d thought it through.

I looked at his face. I couldn’t say no.

I didn’t have feelings for him. Not really.

But I needed new people in my life. I needed to stop thinking about Liam.

So I nodded and squeezed his hand.

“Can we deal with this first?”
