My Wedding Day, Their Marriage Certificate Chapter 06

The audience erupted at once. 

No one had expected to show up for a wedding reception and 

get front–row seats to this much scandal. 

Ethan’s parents rushed onto the stage. After looking at his 

phone, they questioned him anxiously. 

“Son, is this true? If she really caused someone’s death, this 

wedding absolutely cannot continue. We can’t let her drag the 

Bennett name through the mud.” 

Laurel looked as if she had found a lifeline and hurried to 

defend herself. 

“Ethan, maybe this is just Claire’s way of getting you back.” 

“How do you know she’s telling the truth? What if she’s lying to you…” 

Ethan cut her off with disgust in his eyes. 

“Enough. I know Claire. She would never do something like that.” 

“Even if she wanted me back, she would never use her own mother’s death as a joke. Not everyone is as cold–blooded as you, willing to smear your own parents when it suits you.” 

Laurel stared at him blankly, bitterness spreading across her face. 

“Ethan, if you hadn’t married me back then, my parents really would have sold me to that old man. I didn’t lie to you.” 

A cold smile curved his lips. 

“Who knows whether you made that up just to get me to 

marry you?” 

“I never even met your parents. Good or bad, I only had your 

word for it.” 

That was Ethan’s nature. 

When he loved someone, he would protect them even against 

reason. Once that love was gone, every word from their mouth 

became an excuse. 

Laurel never imagined that what had happened to me not long ago would now happen to her. 

Ethan walked over to the officiant, took the microphone, and announced, “Today’s wedding is canceled. Everyone, please enjoy the food and drinks. No gifts are necessary.” 

The audience broke into cheers. 

It formed a sharp contrast with the defeated faces of the people onstage. 

Ethan’s mother tugged at his sleeve and frowned as she tried 

to persuade him. 

“Son, why don’t you call and ask what’s going on over there? I know Claire wouldn’t lie, but what if there’s some 

misunderstanding?” 

“Everything is already set up. If you don’t get married today, aren’t you just paying for everyone to laugh at you?” 

Ethan thought for a moment and nodded, but his finger 

hovered over the call button for a long time without pressing

In that moment, he had to admit he was scared. 

Finally, he called the hospital. 

The wait for someone to answer felt unbearably long. 

Once the call connected, he urgently asked about my mother’s 

condition. 

When the person on the other end told him that the patient had already passed away by the time the ambulance arrived, the last trace of hope in his heart vanished completely. 

After a long while, he finally came back to himself and dragged Laurel away. 

On the way, memories of our years together kept flooding his 

mind. 

Back in college, we had both secretly taken part–time jobs just so we could buy each other decent gifts. 

After we started working, we had both pushed ourselves to build a future, saving every cent so we could buy a home and a 

car. 

The more he thought about it, the deeper his regret became. 

When they reached courthouse, Laurel panicked completely. 

“Ethan, I won’t divorce you. I promise I’ll never bother you 

and Claire again. Please, just let me live.” 

“If I get divorced, my family won’t let me go. They’ll definitely 

try to sell me off again.” 

Ethan remained unmoved by her pleading. 

“Divorce me, or I send you back to your family. Choose one.” 

It sounded like he was giving her a choice, but there had never 

been one. 

Only then did Laurel realize just how cruel Ethan could be. 

And she had been so smug before, believing she had him firmly in her grasp. 

After he filed the paperwork to end the marriage, Ethan felt a fraction lighter and rushed toward my home.
