My Wedding Day, Their Marriage Certificate Chapter 05

At the wedding venue, Ethan Bennett kept staring at the 

baby’s breath filling the ballroom, his mind clearly elsewhere. 

Even when the officiant asked him questions, he only 

answered halfheartedly. 

Laurel Hayes saw every bit of it and dug her nails so hard into 

her palms until the skin turned red and swollen. 

“Ethan, please look lovingly at the bride beside you.” 

“Do you take her to be your wife, to have and to hold, for as long as you both shall live?” 

Ethan held the microphone but did not answer for a long time. 

He could not force the words out. 

The people around him kept signaling to him with their eyes, 

and the silent pressure closed in from every side. 

After a long silence, he took a deep breath and finally spoke in 

a low voice. 

“I do…” 

Just then, his phone buzzed repeatedly. 

Surprise flashed across his face, and he quickly pulled it out. 

But the moment he read the message, every trace of color drained from his face. He nearly lost his balance. 

[Ethan Bennett, are you happy marrying Laurel over my mother’s dead body?] 

With a loud clatter, the microphone slipped from his hand and 

hit the floor. 

The officiant hurried to smooth things over and asked him 

again. 

Under Laurel’s expectant gaze, Ethan answered with brutal clarity, “I don’t.” 

Everyone in the audience stared at one another in shock. 

He tore off his boutonniere and strode away, but Laurel 

stopped him. 

With tears in her eyes, she looked at him pitifully and asked, “Ethan, are you regretting this?” 

He nodded without hesitation. 

“Yes. I regret it.‘

“I regret dragging you into this wedding as a stand–in. I regret getting legally married to you. Most of all, I regret ever 

knowing you.” 

Laurel was struck speechless by the string of answers. 

She had thought Ethan might regret the wedding at most, but she had never expected him to deny everything about her so 

completely. 

She did not know what had happened to make his attitude 

change so drastically. 

All she could do was ask carefully, “Did Claire say something 

to you?” 

When he did not deny it, Laurel lowered her head and wiped her tears, looking wounded and helpless. 

“Ethan, you know Claire has always looked down on me. Every 

time she gives me advice, she acts so superior.” 

“If even you don’t believe me now, what am I supposed to 

do…” 

That perfectly timed pause said everything she wanted it to 

say. 

Ethan’s icy gaze fell on her, his eyes filled with scrutiny. 

“Did I say Claire did anything? Why are you so eager to smear 

her in front of me?” 

“And if it weren’t for her, your family would have sold you off 

to some old bachelor years ago. You should have been grateful to her. Instead, you deliberately seduced her boyfriend. You 

really are an ungrateful little viper.” 

Laurel stared at him in disbelief. 

She had never expected Ethan to say that.

She had thought that since Ethan had given up his girlfriend of eight years and married her, he must have had feelings for her. 

But now, he he had nailed her to the wall in front of everyone. 

Under the stares from the audience, her whole body began to 

tremble. 

“Ethan, I’m your wife. You can’t treat me like this.” 

Ethan’s face was full of mockery. 

“A marriage certificate means nothing to me. You are only my 

wife if I acknowledge you as one.” 

Before she could answer, he opened the chat on his phone and 

held it up in front of her. 

“Laurel Hayes, Claire’s mother is dead.” 

“And it happened because you kicked her phone away. You 

murderer.” 

Laurel let out a shriek and covered her ears, denying it again and again. 

“I’m not. I’m not a murderer.”
