While handling my mother’s funeral arrangements, I submitted my resignation to the company. 

The project I managed was just starting to turn a profit, and Mr. Cooper refused to let me go no matter what. He tried to 

reason with me patiently. 

“Claire, I heard about what happened, but no man is worth giving up your career over.” 

“How about this? Take some time off. Go wherever you want, 

and the company will count it as paid leave. When you’ve 

cleared your head, come back to work.” 

After thinking it over, I agreed. Then I deleted Ethan Bennett’s 

contact information. 

I changed my phone number and updated every app tied to it. 

After making sure I had not missed anything, I took my mother’s ashes and began traveling the world, just as she had always wanted. 

While I was eating a Cajun seafood boil in New Orleans, Sophie Carter, an old work friend, suddenly sent me a video. 

In the video, Laurel, who had once looked a polished career 

woman, now looked haggard and worn down, as if she had 

aged ten years overnight. 

Even while her coworkers whispered and pointed at her, she forced herself to keep packing up her things. 

Sophie could not help ranting to me. 

[Mr. Cooper fired her, and now she’s demanding severance from the company. She said she’ll sue if they don’t pay.] 

[Everyone saw how well you treated her back then, but she 

stabbed you in the back anyway. Who wouldn’t be afraid of an ungrateful snake like that? Good riddance. The sooner she 

leaves, the better.] 

I watched for a few seconds and did not take it to heart. 

Her ending had been set in stone long ago. 

I had no interest in kicking her while she was down. 

Even when I heard from mutual friends that Ethan had 

resigned soon after, I pushed that news out of my mind too. 

The boy I had once loved with all my heart had died with my 

mother on our wedding day. 

That night, after walking through the French Quarter, I took 

out my mother’s photo and took a picture with her. 

The autumn wind swept fallen leaves across the street, and I 

pulled my scarf tighter around myself. 

A young girl came up to me with flowers in her arms and asked 

with a bright smile, “Miss, would you like to buy some 

flowers? The baby’s breath is really pretty.” 

I smiled and picked out a sprig.. Just as I was about to pay, 

someone stopped me. 

“I’ll pay for her.” 

I looked up at that familiar face and refused coldly. 

“No need. I can afford it.” 

After I paid with my phone, the little girl quickly ran off to find 

her next customer. 

The man glanced at the flower in my hand and could not help 

speaking. 

“You still like baby’s breath so much. I thought…” 

“It has nothing to do with the flowers.” 

When he sensed my coldness, he rushed to tell me how much 

he had missed me. 

“Claire, all this time, I…” 

I cut him off impatiently before he could finish. 

“Ethan Bennett, I don’t want to hear your nonsense.” 

He clearly had not expected me to speak to him like that, and 

his face went blank for a moment. 

“Claire, why do you keep avoiding me?” 

I gave him a cold smile. 

“Because I never want to see you again as long as I live.” 

When he saw the hatred in my eyes, his breath caught slightly. 

After a long pause, he forced one sentence from his throat. 

“Claire… do you hate me?” 

I lowered my eyes with a faint, sarcastic smile. Wasn’t that 

obvious? 

I had no idea where his confusion came from. 

“Ethan Bennett, you caused my mother’s death. Am I not supposed to hate you?”
