The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 10

The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 10

“Vera, I’m sorry. Everything I did was wrong. I was so wrong.”

“I was a fool. Celeste fooled me completely, and I hurt you. But I’ve divorced her now, and I didn’t go through with the ceremony. Can you-”

“No.”

I cut him off before he could say anything more disgusting.

He froze for a moment, then tears welled up in his eyes, and

his voice broke.

“Vera, I know I hurt you deeply. I told one lie after another. I thought you would love me unconditionally, trust me, wait for

  1. me. I never thought-”

“Never thought I would actually let you go and leave for good?”

Lucas hung his head, unable to look at me.

His shoulders shook for a moment before he spoke again.

“It’s all my fault. I was so wrong. I couldn’t control myself, I

crossed lines I shouldn’t have. But I never had romantic

feelings for her. Things just spiraled, and I couldn’t stop them. I thought I’d found a solution that would work for everyone.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“No romantic feelings, but you slept with her? How do you

separate sex from love? And why would you think I’d want a

man who’s been with someone else?”

He hung his head again, silent.

He was too guilty to look at me.

Because he knew he’d been crossing lines with Celeste for a long time.

But he was so sure I would love and trust him that he let

himself make mistake after mistake.

So how did he have the nerve to say the baby wasn’t his?

I asked him that.

Lucas smiled bitterly and made an excuse: “I was deceiving

myself. Celeste said it was her ex–boyfriend’s, and I chose to

believe it.”

“Because she knew that if I knew it was mine, I’d make her get

an abortion and cut ties with her.”

I felt sick again at the word “love.”

My stomach churned, and I couldn’t help but dry heave twice.

Lucas looked up, his face suddenly full of hope. He grabbed my

shoulders.

“Vera, are you pregnant?”

I pushed him away and said coldly: “No. I’m just disgusted. Don’t ever use the words ‘I love you‘ to describe how you feel about me again.”

The hope in his eyes shattered.

He stumbled and fell to his knees, then crawled to my feet.

“Vera, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. Hit me, yell at me, do

whatever you want. Just don’t leave me, please.”

“I know you’re angry. That’s why you sold your stake in our

company. I’ll do anything you ask. Just give me one more

chance.”

“I’ve already had the wedding planners design a whole new wedding. Everything is exactly what you wanted. Come back with me. We can get married right away. Please.”

He pulled a velvet box from his pocket.

Inside was an expensive pink diamond.

It was the one I’d admired in a store window once. He’d

wanted to buy it for me then, but I’d said no because the

company needed the cash.

He’d promised to buy it for me once the company was

successful.

But even after he proposed, he never did.

I didn’t want it anymore.

I took a step back and said each word carefully: “Lucas, we ended a long time ago. We ended the first time you crossed the

line.”

“You know I have a thing about fidelity.”
