The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 11

The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 11

“I personally saw you come home with Celeste at least three times. I gave you chances. You just didn’t take them.”

Lucas’s hand froze in midair, still holding the ring.

“You saw us together? Then why didn’t you-”

“Why didn’t I catch you in the act?”

I laughed softly.

“Because I wanted to part on good terms. Even if you hadn’t

suggested canceling the wedding, I would have.”

If he’d shown up to the rehearsal that day, I would have told

him we were over.

I would have given the wedding to him and Celeste.

I would have ended our eight–year relationship peacefully.

I wanted to leave our love with some dignity.

But he didn’t even give me that last shred of hope.

So I gave up on dignity.

And I realized that a broken relationship full of betrayal and

lies could never have dignity anyway.

That was just me lying to myself.

Lucas stared into my eyes, searching for any sign of emotion.

But the eyes that had once been full of love for him now held no familiar affection, no anger, no sadness, no hatred.

His hand dropped.

The diamond ring fell to the ground, and he didn’t even notice.

Behind me, a voice called out. “Vera, want to grab dinner?”

It was some of my coworkers.

“Sure.”

I turned and ran toward them.

Lucas watched me run off without a second’s hesitation, and

he finally understood that he would never win me back.

He didn’t dare tell me that he’d always known the baby was

probably his.

Since Celeste didn’t call him out, he was happy to play along.

Because he knew that if I ever found out the baby was his, no

matter how much I loved him, I would never forgive him.

And I knew all of that. That was why I was so calm the night

before the wedding when I said “Okay.”

So when I wished them a lifetime of happiness, I really meant

  1. it.

He didn’t dare think about how many times he’d hurt me

under Celeste’s deliberate deception.

The more he thought about it, the more he hated himself.

He raised his hand and started slapping his own face.

“Vera, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have played with fire.”

“I deserve to die.”

The sound of the slaps made my coworkers stop and look back.

One of them asked me. “Vera, do you know that guy slapping himself? I saw him’talking to you earlier.”

I didn’t look back.

“No.”

[The End]
