The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 09

The Wedding Is Off, and So Am I Chapter 09

“Get out.”

When Celeste saw the coldness in his eyes, she stopped trying

and sobbed uncontrollably.

“Lucas, I did all of this because I love you so much.”

“When we were kids, you said you’d marry me when we grew up. But you broke your promise and fell in love with another

woman.”

“I didn’t originally plan to break you and Vera up. But after I

came back to Oakhaven, you came whenever I called. You fixed

my pipes, changed my lightbulbs, hung my curtains. If you didn’t have feelings for me, why would you do all that?”

“You gave me hope. And then that night when you got drunk

and slept with me, that’s when I came up with this plan.”

Lucas closed his eyes in pain and denied it.

“I didn’t. I helped you because I thought of you as a little

sister, just like when we were kids. And that night, I was

drunk. I mistook you for Vera.”

The arrival of the ambulance cut off his excuse.

The video ended as Lucas went with his mother to the hospital.

I closed the video, feeling hollow.

No matter what the truth was, Celeste was right about one

thing: Lucas had given her hope and opportunity. That was

why she was able to deceive him.

Or rather, “deceive!‘ wasn’t even the right word.

Lucas was too smart to be fooled.

He’d only ended up here because he had feelings for Celeste.

My mother still wouldn’t give up. She started bombarding me

with texts.

Mom: [Vera, he was tricked. Why can’t you give him another

chance?]

I thought my mother had completely lost her mind, so I

ignored her.

Then I got a wire transfer for $1,880,000.

The sender was Mrs. Sterling.

I could guess why she was sending it. I wouldn’t be surprised if

she was sitting right next to my mother right now.

So when she called, I didn’t answer.

But I accepted the money without guilt.

Call it compensation for Lucas’s betrayal.

I left the airport, checked into a hotel, and started looking for a

place to live.

I also started sending out job applications.

Three days later, I got an offer from a securities firm.

It was an entry–level position. After graduating, I’d helped Lucas build his company, so my experience was limited.

Finding a job this quickly was already more than I could have hoped for.

On my first day, my boss told me that what he valued most

was my experience in building a successful startup. He said he wanted to invest in my growth.

Luck was on my side. The apartment my agent found for me

was also close to the office.

And so I started my new life with a light heart.

My boss’s investment in me helped me grow fast, and I passed

my probation period easily.

Lost in my work, I’d completely forgotten all the unhappiness.

So when Lucas stopped me outside my office building, I was surprised.

It had only been three months since I left him.

But it felt like our last meeting had been in another lifetime.

He looked unshaven and haggard.

The dark circles under his sunken eyes told me he wasn’t doing well.

Given his current position at the company–not even calling

the shots anymore–I assumed he’d come to confront me

about that.

But instead, he spoke in a hoarse voice.

“Vera, I’ve missed you so much.”

“These past few months, I’ve barely been able to sleep. I’ve

been looking for you everywhere. I was afraid you’d left me for good.”

“And when I do sleep, ‘I dream about you walking away from

me.“
